Eternals Is Smashing Avengers’ Stereotype

Marvel Cinematic Universe has recurrently dodged multiple pragmatical and sensitive subjects ingenuously. Be it queerbaiting Bucky in the entire odysseys or tackling the issue of over-sexuality of Black Widow. The studio has artfully adopted a toasted policy of being tight-lipped at needy occasions. However, the upcoming Eternal that touts itself as a tipping point in the Avengers Universe, apart from brandishing the narrative with a prominent cast ensemble, is the one that will set the new dawn in the portfolio of the MCU. As the release date inches close and several nuggets of information get bombarded on the fans, it appears Marvel is reversing its trend of callousness.

PHASTOS GOES DOWN IN THE HISTORY

The scarce LGBTQIA+ representation is a thing that has been haunting the MCU superheroes and its cult fandom for years. Their nefarious act of setting queer cues for Bucky in previous phases. And again, following it in The falcon and the Winter Soldier series only to ax them brutally later was an act of disconcertment for the queer community. So finally, answering the desperate calls, the upcoming Eternals will dish out to the audience the first open Gay Superhero, Phastos. The character is essayed by Brian Tyree Henry, and he is introduced as a wizard to engineering and inventions. More so, the movie will also feature the first on-screen same-sex kiss. Reportedly, Henry and Haaz Sleiman (as hubby of Phastos) will share intimate moments, and this no-doubt will be groundbreaking in itself for MCU’s queer audience.

ADDRESSING THE DISABILITIES

Of late, the superhero franchise has witnessed domination by characters who have enhanced cerebral capabilities, extraordinary physical potential, or anything categorized as surreal. Anything less than this virtual bar does not qualify to join the league of superheroes. But Eternals, at last, has scarped this notion and is all set to pave the way for the first character with a tragic disability in the mainstream media. Thena (played by Angelina Jolie), as revealed by Nate Moore (producer), is the character that suffers from dementia due to her prolonged life. The movie will see her navigating through these humane struggles alongside discharging her superhero duties.

Though this nuance is concentrated towards on-screen inclusivity, can still be a milestone. And now, for yet another marvelous Marvel move of the studio, the movie will also welcome Lauren Ridloff as the first deaf leading cast. She will be portraying the gender-swapped Makkari (possessing superhero strengths, speed, and reflexes.) Later this year, Alaqua Cox, who is also deaf, will appear as Echo in the Hawkeye series of Disney+.

GIFTING A NEW DNA OF CINEMATOGRAPHY

Marvel projects are often synonymous with VFX and green screen ventures. Endgame, Iron Man, Infinity stones, or any film for that matter flexes heavily on visual effects. The upcoming cosmic adventure Eternals is expected to steal the show with a fresh take on cinematography. The Academy award-winning director Chloe Zhao has revealed that the movie employs a minimum of computer graphics and centers more around real locations. The ‘Nomadland’ fabled director shares her thoughts with Variety she says,

“It has a completely different DNA from the [other Marvel movies]. It’s shot different than all the other ones. It’s in real locations and they found some crazy extraterrestrial-looking locations.”

The movie will usher the filmmaking of Marvel to unfathomable heights. Essentially tucking them a notch higher.

With this, Marvel is explicitly sending the message in capitals that when it comes to unconventionality, fixing the errors or innovative disruptions they aren’t the hesitators. And if the similar vogue continues, they will soon be the torch-bearer of these indispensable changes. Hoping the mainstream counterparts will fall in line soon.

#Kolkata: Tomorrow is the ATM cheater (Kolkata News) after buying the glasses. The fraudster, identified as Shauvik Bandyopadhyay, snatched a person’s ATM card from an ATM counter on Rashbehari ATM Fraud Avenue. Using that card, he bought spectacles from a spectacle shop in the area for 1900 rupees. Not only that, before buying the glasses, the fraudster also took Rs 1 lakh in cash from the ATM, a person named Sudip Dey complained to the Taliganj police station to this effect.

On October 26, Sudip Dey visited an ATM in the Rash Behari Avenue area (Kolkata News). The cheater Shauvik was standing there. He introduced himself as a bank employee. I want to know Sudip Babu, you can’t deposit money without KYC update. The fraudster asked Sudip Babu to give the PIN using the ATM card (Rashbehari ATM Fraud). At that opportunity he knew the pin. It is alleged that he changed the card by trickery (Kolkata News).

According to the police sources of Taliganj police station, after buying spectacles using the card, a message goes to the card owner Sudip Babu, spectacles have been bought using the card (Kolkata News). The name of the spectacle shop is found in it. The police started the investigation from that source. At the same time, CCTV footage of the ATM counter on Rashbehari Avenue where Rashbehari ATM Fraud had fraudulently changed Sudip Babu’s card was collected for investigation purposes.

According to police sources (Kolkata News), after buying spectacles using the card, the fraudster in the shop said that he had bought spectacles for his father. The father is about to come, he will say that he has taken the son. But forgetting this, Rashbehari ATM Fraud. Police arrested the accused from Bishnupur area of South 24 Parganas on Saturday night (Kolkata News). If the accused is produced in the Alipore court, the judge has ordered to keep him in police custody till November 5.

The cultural conversation: Ithra study finds positive cultural participation in KSA and wider MENA region despite systemic challenges

DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 31, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra), a leading cultural think tank in the region, commissioned three reports to better understand the evolution of the cultural and creative industry in the Saudi, regional and global context. The research takes the pulse of the public on their creative and cultural experiences at a time when the sector is undergoing a radical transformation and is slowly recovering from the effects of COVID-19. It consolidates Saudi and global experts’ perspectives, highlighting key insights on the production, consumption and role of government and other enablers of the sector.

Policymakers and service providers need to focus on making cultural participation more inclusive by addressing information barriers and supporting the participation of low-income groups
Governments and communities may implement initiatives to promote life-long cultural learning (e.g., through greater emphasis on education curriculum)
Cultural institutions in MENA can learn from each other’s distinct strengths to help boost participation across the region

Netflix’s one of most commercially successful venture Extraction that concluded with ambiguity about the survival of Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is finally getting a sequel. With more than 99 million subscribers tuning in to watch the movie, the film impeccably dishes out action-jammed scenes, a near-perfect storyline, and terrific cinematography. The streaming platform confirmed the same and has spilt beans on what will go down in the upcoming sequel. Here is everything we know so far about Extraction 2.

WHEN AND WHERE

The sequel is likely to get a limited theatrical release and mostly can be streamed on Netflix. At present, no official dates have been confirmed. However, a recent teaser trailer suggests that the movie will be coming soon. Hopefully, in the second half of the new year.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN EXTRACTION 2?

The new instalment will trace a similar plot wherein Tyler has survived his wounds and gets tasked with a new mission. He has to extract a family at the world’s deadliest prison who are staying at the mercy of a Georgian gangster. But the scuffing grows brutal, and in the wake of this, the gangster dies. His equally ruthless brother redeems the death by hunting Tyler’s team in Sydney.

The ambiguous ending of the previous iteration is expected to get addressed in the upcoming sequel. The film will also attempt to fill in relationship gaps between Tyler and Gaspar (David Harbour). Sam Hargrave who made his directorial debut with this movie comments about it. He says,

“The beauty of an ambiguous ending is that there’s a lot of ways you can go, you can go forwards or backward. Either way, you look on the timeline are very interesting stories”

Though the opening scenes of the teaser trailer show Tyler surfacing out of the water, it is expected the movie will be moving forward. But take this nugget of information with a grain of salt.

No official casting information has been announced. So far, Chris Hemsworth will reprise the role of Tyler Rake, the deadly mercenary.

“I was more terrified than I’d been doing any other thing. All these thoughts were racing through my mind, like ‘What do I do?’ ‘Do I play a caricature of our fathers?’ ‘Are people going to want me to play a larger, catchall idea of what a Korean ajusshi is?’”

Steven was stuck with the quintessential image of an Asian father with all its stereotypes and found it immensely difficult to transcend the boundations. However, the problem was not only to challenge how others perceive the character but also the “gaze in (his) mind”.

But a production as big as ‘The Witcher’ suffered terribly due to the ongoing delays. On top of that, one of the leading stars of the second season, Kristofer Hivju came positive for Coronavirus. The shooting suffered badly and couldn’t be resumed until mid-August. It seemed like things were going better this time around, when a second wave swept across England, where they were shooting for the series. Once again, after months, the crew resumed shooting, but then Henry got himself injured. Suddenly, it all began to look very bleak.

HENRY CAVILL REPLACEMENT FOR ‘THE WITCHER’

Amidst all this troubled time, came the news that Henry Cavill has finally decided to leave the show and his replacement has already been announced. It was widely reported that actor Matt Bomer, the Golden Globe Award-winning actor, would fill Henry’s shoes to play Geralt of Rivia. It was a major blow to the actor’s fans worldwide and the fans of ‘The Witcher’ who had become accustomed to Henry’s amazing portrayal of their favourite Witcher by now. The rumours travelled well into 2021 as neither Henry nor Netflix came ahead to clear the air.

All the speculations and rumours about Henry leaving the show turned out to be false when Netflix officially announced that ‘The Witcher’ Season 2 will release in December 2021. The fantastic trailer for season 2 dropped in July 2021, to rave reviews. Netflix was also quick to announce that the series will return for a third season as well, and yes, starring Henry Cavill as the sword-wielding monster-hunter. Hence, it all turned out to be blatant rumours.

Henry Cavill seems quite happy with the show’s run for a second season and Geralt of Rivia has all the potential to become an iconic character in the future. So, only a fool would let such an opportunity slip from their hands, and Henry ain’t no fool!
