StoryFile Strengthens Leadership Team Ahead of Series A Raise

StoryFile

The inventor of Conversational Video named co-founder Heather Maio-Smith to the new role of Chief Visionary Officer and co-founder Stephen D. Smith as CEO; Matthew Everitt becomes CFO; “In a world of bots, droids, and avatars, it is my pleasure to make AI more human,” said Stephen

Los Angeles, CA, March 30, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — StoryFile, the LA-based startup and leader in conversational video AI, announced it is expanding its leadership team as the company scales operations to further accelerate its mission to make its technology universally accessible. Heather Maio-Smith, one of the company’s co-founders and current President and Chief Executive Officer, was appointed to the newly created role of Chief Visionary Officer, and will continue to set the course for the future of storytelling and the many ways it can benefit humanity.

Stephen Smith, the current Executive Chairman of the Board and also a co-founder, succeeds Heather as Chief Executive Officer. Matthew Everitt joins the company as Chief Financial Officer, having recently served as Executive Producer of NBC’s World of Dance with Jennifer Lopez and in both CFO and CEO roles for the World of Dance organization.

The moves come after a successful 2021 in which StoryFile launched its StoryFile Life platform, brought its technology to Fortune 500 clients, began working with icon William Shatner as both a user of the platform and member of its advisory board, and raised an additional $5M in seed funding. StoryFile expects to close its Series A funding in the second quarter of 2022.

“I am excited to move into the role of Chief Visionary Officer at StoryFile because it will allow me to concentrate on shaping and building the future of the company,” said Heather Maio-Smith. “As CVO, I will be spearheading the development of new prototypes and exploring all the ways in which institutions will be able to use our technology and our new Platform Conversa to develop new and creative Conversational Video Interactions, adding value to businesses, families, and humanity everywhere, now and in the future. We are so lucky to have Stephen join us as the new CEO, who will be the force that will scale and grow StoryFile into the global company that we will be.”

Heather Maio-Smith was the concept creator behind the technology that preserved Holocaust survivor stories when her previous company, Conscience Display (which also worked in the United Nations), worked together on a project with USC. Inspired to bring her vision to everyone, she wanted people in the future to be able to have the same kinds of conversations she was having with witnesses to history. Everyone has a story to tell, and thus she founded StoryFile to build a no-code, cloud-based platform with its own proprietary AI technology. Today StoryFile has built a way for people everywhere (businesses and individuals alike) to take advantage of this new innovative medium – Conversational Video – which is revolutionizing storytelling and communications. Since the founding of StoryFile, she has appeared on 60 Minutes, CBS Sunday Morning, and the BBC, and spoken at SXSW, MIT, the AI Summit and more. Heather retains the title of President at StoryFile.

“After thirty years of being involved in technology-based storytelling, I look forward to building the next revolution in video with the amazing team at StoryFile,” said Stephen D. Smith. “Conversational Video is going to change the way we work, learn, and communicate at home, school, business, and the metaverse. In a world of bots, droids and avatars it is my pleasure to help make AI more human.”

Stephen is an international speaker and oral historian, specializing in immersive media. He has been the Executive Director of USC Shoah Foundation, the Institute founded by Steven Spielberg, where he led the distribution of the world’s largest audio-video archive in 44 languages across 100 countries and with partners such as Discovery Channel, ProQuest and Ancestry. Stephen has led several international projects devoted to memorializing and educating about genocide, including the UK Holocaust Center and Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, UNESCO’s Genocide Education efforts, the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center in Rwanda, and South Africa’s Holocaust and Genocide Foundation. He has produced several documentary films and authored several books.

Matthew Everitt joins StoryFile as Chief Financial Officer. From 2012-2022, he served in multiple executive roles for the World of Dance organization where he helped build one of the world’s preeminent dance entertainment brands with a hit television show on NBC, over 20 million followers online and live events spanning 25+ countries across the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia. Prior to World of Dance, he served as CFO for multiple ventures with successful exits including the global marketing and PR firm PainePR (sold to Cossette) and media and entertainment firm Vision Entertainment (sold to Great Hill Partners).

In April, StoryFile will launch its Conversa platform, the first and only SaaS solution available for any organization in the world to create and publish their own conversational video content to communicate with their team, clients, or the public.

What Really Happened Between Will Smith And Chris Rock At The Oscars

What

Where There is Will There Is War

Will Smith’s violent reaction to Chris Rock’s ‘humour’ is still the hottest topic of gossip in the world of entertainment. On Monday world woke up to a slap that was heard across the world. Rock was smacked on the Oscar stage by Smith for a distasteful joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. And ever since, there’s been a tsunami of opinions and comments about the incident. People are already divided on the whole scenario. Some called the best actor winner’s actions ‘over the top’ and ‘unnecessarily aggressive’ and some called out the comedian’s comments on Jada.

Audiences over the Internet reacted as wildly as the incident. Comedian, Seàn Burke tweeted, “Normally the heckling comes before the hitting. Will Smith is an innovator. He’s changed the heckling game forever.”

Another Twitter user expressed their solidarity with Chris Rock by tweeting, “I would be so embarrassed if my man “defended” me like that. There is nothing sexy to me about not being able to control your temper. If you’re losing it like that in public I can only imagine how you act in private. Violence is violence. Red flag #Oscars #WillSmith #ChrisRock”

Some people applauded Will and some applauded Chris for not losing his calm. And yet some expressed their concerns over Pinkett’s toxic dominant attitude toward Will.

Richard William’s Take

Keeping the social media commentary and ‘memery’ aside, Mr Richard William, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams – whose portrayal on-screen brought Smith his first-ever Oscar the same night condemned Smith and expressed surprise that the incident had taken place.

“We don’t know all the details of what happened,” he told NBC through his son, Chavoita LeSane. “But we don’t condone anyone hitting anyone else unless it’s in self-defence.”

Pinkett Smith

Pinkett Smith stayed silent on the whole situation and the public debate that ensued over the merits of Rock’s joke and Smith’s actions until Tuesday when she posted on her Instagram handle: “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it”.

It seems she doesn’t want to comment on the whole thing directly.

Will Smith lost his temper after presenter Chris Rock made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Will walked up to Chris on stage and slapped him hard across the face. He later won the Best Actor award for his performance in King Richard. In his acceptance speech, Will apologized to the academy but not to Chris. It was only on Tuesday morning that he shared an apology for Chris as well on Instagram. He said that he was embarrassed about what he did.

Our Take

‘When one’s actions, words and thoughts are congruent. Only then can one be in absolute mental equilibrium.’

Chris Rock was wrong, making fun of someone else’s trauma is wrong. It amounts to bullying.

Will Smith was wrong. Responding to words with hands is wrong. It amounts to assault.

And it is wrong to let a bully, in this case, Chris Rock and an assaulter aka Will Smith overshadow Oscar night which was about Art, creativity and entertainment.

Samsung Sued for Infringement of HEVC Essential Patents

Samsung

Business Wire India

MPEG LA announced today that enforcement actions have been brought in Landgericht Düsseldorf, Germany against Samsung Electronics GmbH ("Samsung") for infringement of patents in MPEG LA’s HEVC Patent Portfolio License. The patents are essential to the HEVC (also known as H.265 and MPEG-H Part 2) digital video coding standard used in products that encode and decode video for Internet, television and mobile transmission, reception and use.

The enforcement actions seeking injunctions, monetary damages and expenses were prepared by a team of lawyers led by Axel Verhauwen of Krieger Mes & Graf v. der Groeben and Gottfried Schüll of Cohausz & Florack.

Billy Butcher With Laser Eyes Is Homelander’s Worst Nightmare Come True

Billy

Billy Butcher will defeat Homelander with his laser eyes in The Boys Season 3

There’s a part of us that always knew if Billy Butcher had laser eyes, he could be Homelander’s worst nightmare. Out of all the groundbreaking things that The Boys Season 3 trailer revealed, some scenes showed that the “Diabolical” Billy Butcher has got Supe powers and his laser eyes are no less than the show’s Superman parody.

The bloodiest battle ever is here

Homelander and Ryan (Homelander and Becca Butcher’s son) are not the only ones with laser eyes in The Boys, not anymore. Now, Billy Butcher who has always believed “the only good supe is a dead supe” will have Supe powers, out of which one is laser eyes.

When The Boys Season 3 poster was posted by The Boys’ official Twitter account, it had Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher with golden flare in his eyes and was captioned “Soon, it’ll be time to level the playing field.”

The flare in his eyes is no less than his antagonist’s and the most horrifying figure in the show, Homelander. Now, when both Butcher and Homelander have got superpowers, out of which laser eyes are common, it could be a call for the bloodiest battle ever in The Boys.

Billy Butcher: From a Vigilante to a Supe

What we know for sure is, having Supe powers without Compound V is not possible. According to the comic of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the Boys had their superpowers to compete with the corrupt Supes.

While in Eric Kripke’s show, only Kimiko had superpowers out of the entire vigilante group. Probably, now the show is bending a little towards the comic as Butcher bends from the vigilante to the Supe side and gets those “flary golden” eyes.

There are two scenes in the trailer that showcase “Billy has powers now.” First, when he throws away a Supe with just a single punch and second when he is seen shooting lasers from his eyes. In the midst, he is seen grabbing a green serum-like thing (probably Compound V) which gives him those golden eyes eventually puking on Hughie’s face.

In The Boys Season 3, Billy Butcher will level the ground with his Supe powers and defeat Homelander with his laser eyes.

The Boys Season 3 will parody MCU’s Civil War

Apart from The Boy’s leader transitioning into a “Supe”, there were several new Supes introduced in the trailer too. We know that the show will have five new Supes this time who will add to the cast. And, with the upcoming show’s episode named Payback, we think it will be the reuniting of the team that The Seven replaced.

So, the two new Supes introduced are the members of the Payback. We got the first look at Jensen Ackles’s Soldier Boy, who is speculated to be the strongest Supe in the show. Another face that came forth was Laurie Holden’s Crimson Countess, who was seen at “Brave Maeve’s Inclusive Kingdom” theme park shooting at an employee in Homelander’s attire.

The other three members who may join the gang are Iron Man’s parody Tek Night, Swato taking after MCU’s Hank Pym, and Mind Droid inspired by Vision. If this happens, we will get The Boys version of MCU’s Civil War with Avengers’ parody, a.k.a Payback on one side and Justice League’s parody, a.k.a The Seven on the other.

No matter what happens, the show will be the bloodiest show ever on any platform and the most diabolical The Boys season yet. Season 3 will premiere with its first three episodes on 3rd June 2022 on Amazon Prime.

FrogCoin’s Fight for the Forests Attracts Attention from Heavy-Hitters of Conservation Causes

FrogCoin’s

The Ethereum-based cryptocurrency is preparing for a partnership with The Rainforest Foundation

Boston, MA, March 29, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — (via Blockchain Wire) Cryptocurrency has long been a target of criticism for climate activists because of the large amount of energy required for mining currencies such as Bitcoin, most of which relies on traditional fossil fuels such as oil and coal, resulting in a massive carbon footprint. However, in recent years, many ecologically-inclined crypto enthusiasts have moved their operations to grids that utilize clean, renewable energy such as hydroelectric, solar, or wind to offset emissions, or even run carbon-neutral operations. This environmentally-conscious spirit has, even more recently, reared its head on the Ethereum Network in the form of a new project, known as “FrogCoin.”

FrogCoin, which launched on March 26th, on the Ethereum Network, is still a somewhat small project with one great, noble goal: to harness the enthusiasm of cryptocurrency to save the rainforest.

“It’s more than just a case of trying to use the master’s tools to dismantle the master’s house,” explains project manager, Nathan Start, from his home in England. “Cryptocurrency has become a multi-trillion dollar endeavor over the past few years, and at the same time, there’s been something of a sea-change in the attitudes of traders and developers. People are looking to mitigate and repair the damage that large swaths of the crypto market have done, but they also want to continue to use crypto. We believe, and we think others will, too, that the best solution is to use this unstoppable momentum to put funds directly into environmental conservation.”

The Amazon rainforest has historically been the largest carbon sink on the planet, but within the past few years, ecologists have come to a startling conclusion: what once served as a net-negative for carbon emissions, has become a source of emissions, due to deforestation and massive forest fires. In order to combat this trend, FrogCoin imposes a 5% tax on buying and selling, which is, in turn, donated to The Rainforest Foundation. Within the first few days of launch, FrogCoin has already donated $13,000 USD to the organization, where the funds are dispersed to community-based deforestation efforts on the ground in Panama, Guyana, Brazil and Peru.

“That’s only the beginning,” assured Start, “we’re already on the verge of signing a co-venture agreement that’ll make the partnership between FrogCoin and The Rainforest Foundation much more official. It’s all moving very fast, which is absolutely incredible, considering that now, more than ever, this is the most urgent issue regarding life on this planet.”

Aside from this news, Start points to even more exciting things en route for FrogCoin, including a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) produced in collaboration with indigenous artists from the regions in which The Rainforest Foundation operates, the goal being to divert even more resources directly to the communities charged with conservation, while showcasing their talents to a global audience. “Our short-term goal is to do whatever we need to position FrogCoin as THE green token on the crypto market. Right now, we have a 5% tax going to marketing to build awareness, but as we grow, we’ll progressively divert more of those funds toward donations. We’re showing people we’re here for the long-haul however we need, be it through audits, or burning the liquidity pools to show our level of commitment.” After a beat, Start smiled and quipped, “at FrogCoin, we’ll burn LP before we ever burn a tree.”

Purchase of FrogCoin is now available on the FrogCoin website, and made possible through UniSwap Exchange. Follow FrogCoin on Twitter for updates and news, or connect with the FrogCoin community through Discord and Telegram. FrogCoin can also be identified by its CA: 0xBC4138C99081A960D6AFe0A5cA4f16d7d626505D

Lacework Labs Cloud Threat Report Identifies Most Exploited Vulnerabilities Targeting Businesses In the Cloud

Lacework

Insecure configurations put small businesses at increased risk and Log4j-based malware attacks persist

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Lacework®, the data-driven cloud security company, today released the third volume of its Cloud Threat Report, a semi-annual accounting of the ongoing cybersecurity threats impacting the cloud. Conducted over a six month period, the Cloud Threat Report found threat actors are broadening the scope of their efforts to gain illicit access to cloud data and resources. In addition to increased targeting of cloud platforms beyond AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, malicious actors are rapidly adapting new attacks to target organizations in the cloud. As world governments issue warnings over the increasing cybercrime threat, the report’s findings highlight some of the most common threats businesses should protect against.

Small businesses in particular are at risk from cloud access brokers, who sell access to cloud accounts online. According to the report, 78 percent of SMBs observed by the Lacework Labs team had compliance violations within their cloud infrastructure, opening the door for attackers to gain initial access, escalate privileges, and impact protected data.

“Threat actors continue to show sophistication as they create and adapt new attacks to compromise the cloud,” said James Condon, Director of Research, Lacework. “Organizations moving more data to cloud infrastructure need to be just as nimble, employing security best practices and modern tools with continuous monitoring to stay ahead of cybercriminals and keep critical information safe.”

This third installment of the Cloud Threat Report highlights four key areas of cloud security: cloud security posture, vulnerabilities and software supply chain, runtime threats and linux malware, and proactive defense and intelligence. Based on anonymized data across the Lacework platform from September 2021February 2022, the report found:

  • Cloud security posture mistakes are an open door for threat actors: 72 percent of cloud environments monitored had insecure configurations, providing a warm welcome for attackers to gain initial access, establish persistence, escalate privileges, and impact protected data across clouds. The most common risks were found in the AWS services IAM, S3, and EC2, which were also the most popular services for attackers to abuse.
  • Every cloud is a target, not just the big 3: Despite being one of the largest cloud services providers, AWS accounts make up only 16% of overall hosting of illicit access for sale, while lesser known companies like HostGator and Bluehost make up half. Though corporate accounts are being offered for as low as $300 USD and upwards of $30k USD, the average price of a compromised AWS account is roughly $40 USD. This high volume of lower priced inventory indicates that attackers may be taking advantage of the increased compliance violations in SMB organizations and a lack of focus on securing consumer accounts.
  • Log4j remains a significant threat, and malware is adapting quickly: 31 percent of malware infections observed by the Labs team use Log4j as the initial infection vector. What’s more, Muhstick, the malware family most commonly observed in the wild, can incorporate vulnerabilities like Log4j into their operations within 48 hours, reinforcing how quickly threat actors will respond to take advantage of vulnerability disclosures.

The Lacework Labs team also examined issues around compliance, exposed Docker APIs and malicious containers, and additional vulnerabilities within the software supply chain. A full copy of the report and the executive summary can be found here.

Based on the findings of this report, Lacework Labs recommends that defenders evaluate security infrastructure against industry best practices and implement proactive defense and intelligence tools with active vulnerability monitoring like the Polygraph® Data Platform. The Lacework Labs team has put together several resource guides organizations can use to set up canary tokens, honeypots, and other proactive tools on the Lacework blog.
