Chinese Billionaire Jack Ma Living in Tokyo After China’s Crackdown Against Firms: Report

https://ift.tt/aZckmqv

Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post owned by Ma has recently reported that wealthy Chinese were looking for avenues to migrate after Xi won the third five-year term in last month’s once-in-a-five-year Congress of the CPC, fearing crackdowns against them.

Chinese Billionaire Jack Ma Living in Tokyo After China's Crackdown Against Firms: Report

Beijing: Chinese billionaire and e-commerce giant Alibaba founder Jack Ma who ran into trouble with the Chinese government over violating anti-monopoly regulations and kept a low profile since 2020 is now living in Tokyo for about six months, according to a media report on Tuesday.

Ma’s months-long stay in Japan with his family has included stints in hot springs and ski resorts in the countryside outside Tokyo and regular trips to the US and Israel, the Financial Times reported, quoting people with direct knowledge of his whereabouts.

Ma, 58, has largely disappeared from public view since he criticised the Chinese regulators in 2020, accusing the state-run banks of having a “pawnshop mentality” and calling for bold new players that can extend credit to the collateral poor.

Since then, both the companies he founded — Ant and e-commerce group Alibaba — have faced a series of regulatory obstacles. Chinese regulators called off Ant’s blockbuster USD 37 billion initial public offering and fined Alibaba a record USD 2.8 billion for antitrust abuses last year.

His absence from China has coincided with the escalation of President Xi Jinping’s zero-Covid controls this year. This led to a harsh lockdown of Shanghai and the surrounding Yangtze river delta in April and May and sparked nationwide protests over recent days, the report said.

Before his troubles with the Chinese government, Ma had visited India, where his Alibaba developed business interests, and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015. Ma has a home in Hangzhou, a city near Shanghai where Alibaba is headquartered. Since his fallout with Chinese authorities, Ma has been spotted in various countries, including Spain and the Netherlands.

Born to a poor family, Ma, who is the most revered businessman among Chinese people, grew up to be one of China’s richest men. The sudden and surprise announcement by Ma in 2019 to retire stating that he preferred to die at a beach than at his work table set off speculation that he was feeling the weight of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), which firmly exercised its control over China’s top businesses prompting him to downsize his businesses.

His retirement and the subsequent anti-monopoly crackdown by the CPC on a host of Chinese businesses, including Tencent and ByteDance, sparked speculation that the party headed by Xi is cutting wealthy businesses to size to reduce their growing influence in China.

Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post owned by Ma has recently reported that wealthy Chinese were looking for avenues to migrate after Xi won the third five-year term in last month’s once-in-a-five-year Congress of the CPC, fearing crackdowns against them.

A growing number of rich Chinese and even the middle class are paying for residence and citizenship through investment, which offers them location fluidity and the option to relocate at any given moment between two or more “home” nations, the Post report said. Ma was spotted on the Spanish island of Mallorca last year. He has kept a low profile during his stay in Tokyo, bringing his personal chef and security with him and keeping his public activities to a minimum, said the people with direct knowledge of his whereabouts, the FT report said.

His social activities centre around a small handful of private members’ clubs, with one based in the heart of Tokyo’s swish Ginza district and another in the Marunouchi financial district facing the Imperial Palace.

Others said Ma had used his time in Japan to expand his business interests beyond the core e-commerce technologies of Alibaba and Ant, and into the fields of sustainability. He has largely turned over the reins to a new generation of leaders at both companies.

Ma’s six months in Japan have coincided with a historic sell-down by SoftBank of its long-term shareholding in Alibaba after the Japanese technology group suffered a heavy hit from a global tech rout earlier this year. The Jack Ma Foundation and Ant did not respond to requests for comment regarding his visit to Tokyo, the report said.

Digital Technologies Driving Transformational Growth Across the Biomanufacturing Value Chain

Digital

Digitalization enables a sustainable, effective, cost-efficient, and error-free system for biomanufacturing

SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The biomanufacturing sector is experiencing a digitalization transformation that is aligned with Industry 4.0. According to Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis on the digital biomanufacturing industry, digital tools applied across processes, monitoring, analytics, and operations have accelerated biomanufacturing with a data-driven approach. Some of the most difficult challenges in biomanufacturing are scalability and reproducibility, particularly in the production of biologics and cell and gene therapies. However, digitalization enables a long-term, effective, cost-effective, and error-free biomanufacturing system.

Digitalization brings biomanufacturing to the next level.

For further information on this analysis, please click here.

“Digitalization improves the entire value chain of manufacturing biologics, competitive generic therapy (CGT) products, and vaccines,” said Neeraja Vettekudath, Healthcare Research Analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “Automated processes, remote monitoring, and digital supply chains accelerate biomanufacturing rates of biopharmaceuticals.”

Vettekudath added: “Digitalization deploys advanced sensors, artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), and blockchain to create platforms. It builds seamless biomanufacturing systems where information is passed from one stage to the next. This increases efficiency, creating growth opportunities for digital biomanufacturing solution providers, enablers, and adopters.”

To capitalize on the growth prospects of digital biomanufacturing, market participants should:

  • Invest in building digital twin models for predictive and data-driven biomanufacturing decisions.
  • Make an initial investment in digital tools that streamline processes.
  • Incorporate advanced software or AI tools to make sense of bioprocess data and accelerate the advancement toward developing robust and high-power processing systems that can use this data.

Neymar to Miss Brazil’s Last Group Game at World Cup

Doha: Neymar will miss Brazil’s last group game at the World Cup because of his right ankle injury, the team doctor said Tuesday.

Rodrigo Lasmar said the Brazil forward will not recover in time to face Cameroon in the Group G game on Friday.

Neymar missed Monday’s game against Switzerland, when Brazil won 1-0 to secure its spot in the round of 16. A draw against Cameroon will be enough to give Brazil first place in the group.

Lasmar did not give a timetable on Neymar’s return, and did not say if the player would return at all. Brazil’s coaching staff, though, reiterated Tuesday that the Paris Saint-Germain forward was expected to play again at the tournament in Qatar.

Neymar, who damaged ligaments in his ankle during Brazil’s opening match against Serbia, was the only player who didn’t go to Stadium 974 to watch the match against Switzerland. He stayed at the team hotel for physiotherapy treatment.

Lasmar said Neymar also had a fever on Monday, which “was under control” and would not affect his ankle treatment.

Lasmar said right back Danilo, who also is nursing an ankle injury, and left back Alex Sandro, who had to leave Monday’s match with a muscle injury, also won’t play against Cameroon.

Danilo got injured in the team’s opener last week and also missed the game against Switzerland. Alex Sandro got hurt in the final minutes of Brazil’s win against the Swiss and was replaced by Alex Telles. Tests on Tuesday showed that he as a muscle injury in his left hip. Lasmar also did not provide the expected recovery time for Danilo and Alex Sandro.

Tite replaced Neymar with Fred and Danilo with Éder Militão in Monday’s starting lineup. The coach was yet to announce who would play on Friday, but was expected to rotate players considering a draw against Cameroon would be enough to secure first place. If Brazil finishes first, the last-16 match would take place only three days later. Brazil’s opponents would come from Group H, which includes Portugal, Uruguay, South Korea and Ghana.

Neymar, trying to win his first major title with Brazil, is two goals shy of Pelé’s all-time record of 77 with the national team.

His right ankle also kept him from playing in the 2019 Copa América in Brazil. Five years earlier, he was taken out of the World Cup in Brazil after hurting his back in the quarterfinals against Colombia.

On Tuesday, Brazil complained about the field conditions at Stadium 974, where it could be back for the round of 16 if it finishes first in its group. The team said it would ask FIFA to act and make sure the grass conditions improved at the venue.

Death of Irene Cara, ‘Fame’ movie star and singer, evoked the loss of my youth

https://ift.tt/iAU0grs

I was heartbroken when I learned that Irene Cara, who starred in the 1980 movie “Fame,” died over the weekend at age 63. I found out when a video on TikTok popped up in my feed sharing the news while her most well-known song, “Out Here On My Own,” played in the background.

Although I hadn’t heard or even thought about the song in several decades, the lyrics of 40-plus years ago came flooding back. It was an anthem of youth, of belonging, of hope, of never giving up on your dreams. I was immediately transported to my first apartment in Brighton, Massachusetts, where I’m singing along, the record spinning on the Panasonic suitcase player that opened and revealed two speakers.

Many people seem to like listening to sad music, in part because it’s a stronger trigger for nostalgia than sadness.

Back in the present moment, I’m filled with nostalgia as the words in the initial stanza fill my head: “Sometimes I wonder where I’ve been, Who I am, Do I fit in… .” And then they conclude with the aspirational: “We’re always provin’ who we are, Always reachin’ for that risin’ star …”

It’s a song for anyone who has ever felt alone, who has ever felt that there was no place for them. It’s really a song for everyone. I hummed along with or belted out the “Fame” soundtrack, sobbing off and on, hundreds of times in my early 20s as I was finding my way in the world. Sobbing because I had so many of my own questions about identity, dreams, young love. I always felt like Cara was singing right to me, that she had a window into my emotional experience, which made me feel less alone. This is the power of strong lyrics. They connect us and validate our experiences.

I’ve seen the original version of “Fame” a dozen times, always mesmerized by the character Coco, played by Cara. The film is a story of artistic ambition, and it follows a group of young men and women who audition for the prestigious New York High School of Performing Arts. The movie chronicles the development of the characters over the next four years as they cope with increasing pressures as performers and students. The film also deals with privilege and opportunity: Coco, a dancer from a less affluent background, appears in an unforgettable scene where she is lured by a director to a topless photo shoot. This was a MeToo moment before there was a MeToo movement.

The cast was diverse in race, language, body shape, sexual orientation, and economic background in ways that movies of the late 1970s and early 1980s usually weren’t. I loved the film’s edginess, the way it seamlessly tackled tricky issues such as class, abuse, abortion and drug use, bringing onto the large screen topics that many people only whispered about. These issues offered an opening to thinking about broader experiences beyond my small suburban home town.

The original “Fame” was one of my favorite movies, so I was excited when I heard about the remake in 2009. Until I went to see it. How could they botch that iconic story? Those iconic songs? The new version had no soul; it was too loud, too cheesy and overproduced. I didn’t even watch all the way through.

Cara’s song, however, has remained untouched. As, thankfully, have other much-beloved songs from my youth, like Joni Mitchell’s “Blue,” or Dan Fogleberg’s “Longer.” Many people seem to like listening to sad music, in part because it’s a stronger trigger for nostalgia than sadness.

We also hold on to the lyrics, melodies and emotions around them over long periods of time. I’ve listened to some of these ballads so many times that decades later, I not only remember their words but the exact places where I heard them and how I felt when I did.

Older adults have a really good memory for certain songs from their youth because they listened to that same record over and over,” Dr. Kelly Jakubowski, assistant professor of music psychology at Durham University in the U.K. told Time magazine earlier this year. “It can bring back your memories from that time period when you were having these self-defining experiences.”

Daniel Levitin, the author of “This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession,” notes that the music of our teenage years is fundamentally intertwined with our social lives. The same will be true for today’s teenagers when they are older adults.

In patients with dementia, according to a Northwestern Medicine and Institute for Therapy through the Arts study, musical perception, musical emotion and musical memory can survive long after other forms of memory and cognitive function have disappeared. This response can endure even when executive functions such as planning and reasoning and language ability have been lost.

Music brings us joy by releasing the pleasure neurotransmitter dopamine. It solidifies personal identity and social connectedness. All of which might explain my strong reaction to hearing of Cara’s death even though she was a complete stranger.

I listened to “Out Here on My Own” on repeat over the weekend, and it brought back countless memories of my own life in that period: of singing and performing in high school musicals, of friends, mean girls, secrets, hope. That song and the movie it appeared in were seminal parts of my personal identity, of who I was at that time. So I will never forget Cara and her ballad, which pushed me to reach my “rising star” and gave me hope that anything was possible.

UCL Computer Science To Explore Natural Language Processing On Quantum Computers For Content Discovery and Archive Retrieval

UCL

A new consortium funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering will build on work in quantum mechanics and linguistics conducted over 15 years by researchers at University College London and Quantinuum

CAMBRIDGE, England, Nov. 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Quantinuum, the world’s leading integrated quantum computing company, has joined a consortium with University College London (UCL) and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to explore the industrial relevance of quantum natural language processing (QNLP) and quantum-inspired natural language processing.

The consortium, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering for a Senior Research Fellowship at UCL, will build on a long-term exploration of quantum mechanics and linguistics by Quantinuum’s chief scientist Professor Bob Coecke, head of artificial intelligence Professor Stephen Clark, and Professor Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh of UCL Computer Science.

The BBC hopes to find new ways to represent content in forms readable by computers, to support tasks such as content discovery and archival retrieval. This builds on the Corporation’s previous work with Sadrzadeh on Enhancing Personalised Recommendations with the use of Multi Modal Information.

Ilyas Khan, founder of Cambridge Quantum Computing and CEO of Quantinuum said: “Developing quantum computing so that the broadest and most diverse populations can benefit, means looking across the timing spectrum at applications that can be made productive in the short, medium and long term. As part of our long-term work, we anticipate that true language processing will become important with fault tolerant quantum processors, and our work with the BBC and UCL is a very significant step towards being prepared to take advantage of quantum computers when they become available at scale. Quantinuum is a leader in the fields in which it operates, and this leadership is built on deeply meaningful collaborations such as this.”

In their 15-year collaboration, the researchers established a unified model of statistical and compositional meaning for natural language, in the seminal 2011 paper Mathematical Foundations of a Compositional Distributional Model of Meaning.  The foundational work was guided by Professor Coecke’s categorical quantum mechanics formalism. Experimental evidence followed suite by Professor Sadrzadeh’s work on Concrete Models and Experimental Evaluations for the Categorical Compositional Distributional Model of Meaning. The advance of these techniques beyond academic research, to a scaled industrial level, will take capabilities from mere sentence level to general text, using methods which were initiated in the papers The Mathematics of Text Structure and Evaluating Composition Models for Verb Phrase Elliptical Sentence Embeddings.

The broadcaster’s archives reflect a century of global news and cultural life across the UK and beyond. It is one of the largest broadcast archives in the world, with over 15 million items, including audio, film, and text documents, as well as toys, games, merchandise, artefacts, and historic equipment.
