New Delhi: Former India coach Ravi Shastri opened up about the debate between Shubman Gill and KL Rahul for the third Test match against Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. KL Rahul who is going through a lean patch with the bat has been backed by the team management so far and it led to calls for him to be dropped from the squad and pick an in-form Shubman Gill for the third Test match which will start from March 01 and will be played in Holkar Stadium, Indore.

Shastri opted for Shubman Gill even before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023. Shubman hit his maiden Test century last December against Bangladesh and then scored a massive 208 runs innings against New Zealand in January 2023.

Speaking on the most recent episode of The ICC Review, Shastri reckons that it is time for Rahul Dravid, incumbent coach and captain Rohit Sharma to back Gill for the Indore Test.

“He (Gill) is that good at the moment and whether he scores or doesn’t score, on form, on merit, he deserves a chance,” Shastri said.

“Not at all. I mean, it’s straight up, It comes down to performance,” Shastri replied when asked about how making changes to a winning team may effect combination. “You stick it on the board. This is the performance. It’s a tough thing for a coach, I remember I had to do it many times, where you just sit down, and explain to the player, ‘This is what’s on the board, what do you think?’

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced an updated India squad for Irani Cup on Monday. Opener Mayank Agarwal will captain the Rest of India against Madhya Pradesh in the Irani Cup tie. But middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan misses out on the Irani Cup due to a hairline fracture on his left little finger. Baba Indrajith is the replacement for injured Sarfaraz.

Sarfaraz had sustained a finger injury while playing in the DY Patil T20 Cup in Mumbai. As of now, he is currently nursing the injury at a fitness camp organized by Delhi Capitals in Kolkata.

BCCI took their twitter to announce the Updated squad for Irani Cup:

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked the Rest of India (RoI) squad for the Mastercard Irani Cup to be played against 2021-22 Ranji Trophy Champions Madhya Pradesh from March 1-5, 2023 at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior.” Said BCCI.

“Sarfaraz Khan was unavailable for selection owing to a hairline fracture on his left little finger. The All-India Senior Selection Committee named Baba Indrajith as his replacement for the tournament.” BCCI added.

Madhya Pradesh, the Ranji Trophy champions of the 2021/22 season, were initially scheduled to play their Irani Cup game at the start of the 2022/23 season. But the match was later allotted to Saurashtra, the winners of 2019/20 Ranji Trophy, as they couldn’t play Irani Cup because of the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic a week after they won their first Ranji Trophy title in March 2020.

Ahmedabad: The Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchise Gujarat Giants unveiled their jersey for the inaugural edition of the tournament on Sunday.

The official handle of the franchise took to Twitter to reveal the jersey.

“Presenting to you, our jersey for the inaugural @wplt20 season. The glorious jersey depicts the passion & enthusiasm of our lionesses who are set to give it their all in the first ever season!,” tweeted Gujarat Giants.

In its inaugural edition, five teams – Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz splurged their purse to acquire some of the best talents in the international and domestic circuit in the auction held on February 13.

India’s Smriti Mandhana was the top buy as she was sold for a whopping Rs 3.40 crore to Royal Challengers Bangalore. Team India Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was sold to Mumbai Indians for Rs 1.80 crore while the rest of the stars from India and around the globe too made the cut in one of the five franchises.

Among the foreign players, Australia all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner and England all-rounder Natalie Sciver were the top buys as they were sold to Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians for Rs 3.20 crore respectively. From the India U19 stars, ICC U19 T20 World Cup winning captain, Shafali Verma was the top buy, sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs 2 Crore.

In its first season, the Women’s Premier League will stage a total of 20 league matches and two Playoff games that will be played in a duration of 23 days.

The league will start on 4th March at the DY Patil Stadium with a blockbuster clash between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians.

On Sunday, 5th March 2023, the WPL will have its first double-header day where Royal Challengers Bangalore will square off against Delhi Capitals at the Brabourne Stadium, CCI. UP Warriorz will play their first game of the league against Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium in the evening.

There will be four double headers with the first match starting at 3:30 PM IST. All evening matches will start at 7:30 PM IST.

A total of 11 matches each will be held at the DY Patil Stadium and Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

The final game of the league stage will be played between UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals on 21st March at the Brabourne Stadium, CCI. The Eliminator will be played at the DY Patil Stadium on 24th March.

The Final of Women’s Premier League 2023 will be played at the Brabourne Stadium on 26th March.

Cape Town: Australia skipper Meg Lanning felt that their powerplay with the ball set the tone of the game as they defeated hosts South Africa by 19 runs in the final to lift the Women’s T20 World Cup for the record-extending sixth time on Sunday.

Batting first, Australia rode on an unbeaten 74 from Beth Mooney to post 156/6 in 20 overs. In reply, the South African openers found it hard to get going and could manage only 22 runs in the first six overs. “It’s kind of funny actually. Belinda Clarke messaged me and said, well done for taking the bails. And it’s quite an interesting one because I actually don’t take the bails a lot in that sort of scenario. I think it’s a waste of time and I’ve got to put them back on,” Healy told ABC sport.

“So, it’s annoying. But for some reason, I felt the need to take the bails off and it was like a bizarre moment where I looked at the umpire and said, I think that’s out. And I think Shooter at point was like. I also think that it’s out,” she added.

Kolkata: As many as seven tourists were injured in North Bengal’s Jaldapara National Park on Saturday after two rhinoceroses charged at the safari jeep they were in. Following the attack, the driver of the jeep tried to escape from the scene but the vehicle skidded and fell into a tunnel adjacent to the road passing through the jungle.

According to eyewitnesses, the two rhinoceroses got involved in a fight in the bushes adjacent to the road when the safari jeep reached the spot and stopped there. As a few tourists were clicking photographs and shooting videos of the fighting animals, the attention of the latter got shifted towards the jeep.

A video of the rhinos chasing the tourist vehicle has also surfaced online and is going viral.

A forest department official said that rhinos charging towards tourist vehicles has never been reported before in the Jaldapara national park.

The driver of the jeep, Kamal Gazi, who suffered minor injuries, said that he has been in this profession for a long time, but he has never come across such a situation. “Fortunately, no one has been killed. Things could have been worse,” Gazi said.

New Delhi: Virat Kohli had to go through a tough 2020-22 session, where he consistently failed to churn out runs for India at the international stage. This also forced him to take a time-off for one month. He got his mojo back in September 2022 with an emphatic hundred against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup. After that he smashed three ODI centuries in the bilateral series to take his international century count to 74.

In a recent interaction on the RCB Podcast, Kohli opened up on his lean-patch phase and revealed that MS Dhoni was the only person apart from his friends and family who genuinely reached out to him and stood by his side during that period.

“I have experienced a different kind of phase in my career currently. It’s been a while since I felt (this) free in the sense how I felt all these years of playing at any level of cricket,” said Kohli.

“What is interesting is that throughout this phase apart from Anushka, who has been the biggest source of strength for me because she has been with me throughout this whole time and she has seen me very closely as how have I felt, things that I have gone through, the kind of things that have happened…the only person who, apart from my childhood coach and family…genuinely reached out to me has been MS Dhoni”, the ex India captain revealed.

Kohli said that on normal days, Dhoni would hardly pick up the call but when MS actually reached out to him, the CSK captain said, ‘when you are expected to be strong and looked at as a strong individual people forget to ask how are you doing?’.

“He reached out to me and you can rarely get in touch with him. If I call him on any random day, 99 percent he will not pick up (the phone), because he just does not look at the phone. So, for him to reach out to me…twice it has happened now and one of the things that he’d mentioned in the message while reaching out to me was that: ‘when you are expected to be strong and looked at as a strong individual people forget to ask how are you doing?’”, Kohli shared.

The RCB man further explained that Dhoni’s words hit him hard as he has always been looked at a person who is confident, mentally strong and at that time he had to take a couple of steps backwards to recover.

”So, it (Dhoni’s words) hit home for me because I have always been looked at as someone who is very confident, mentally very strong, who can endure any circumstances and find a way and show us the way. Sometimes, what you realise is that at any given point of time in life as a human being you need to take a couple of steps backwards, understand how you are doing, how your well being is placed”, he told.

Virat also said that Dhoni himself has gone through that phase so he actually knows how a person feel.

“So, there are not many places, for the people who have played the game for a long period, as strong individuals, they can go and explain in a way that the other person can understand. That’s why I mentioned this particular incident because MS Dhoni knows exactly what is going on, he understands it because he has been there himself”.

“He has experienced what I have experienced right now. So, it is only out of experience, and feeling those feelings in that moment is the only way you can be truly compassionate and understanding towards another individual who is going through the same thing”, he concluded.
