After more than a decade of silence and inactivity, ‘The Sopranos’ fans will get to see some of their favourite characters back on the silver screen. The new movie ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ will be directed by David Chase, who also wrote and directed the original series and is credited for the show’s artful storytelling and massive success. The director also revealed in an interview that the story in the movie is one in which he, as a child, was personally involved (on some levels). Here’s everything that we know so far about ‘The Many Saints of Newark’!
What will the movie ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ be about?
In a broad sense of things, the new movie will be a crime drama just like the parent series ‘The Sopranos’ was. The movie will take us back to the state of New Jersey in the late 1960s and early 70s. It will revolve around Tony Soprano as a young man, eager to follow his father’s footstep and gain a foothold in the New Jersey Italian mafia. One of the major backdrops of the movie will be the escalating tensions and, following that, full-scale violent riots between the Italian American and African American communities of Newark, New Jersey. The riots were said to have resulted in 26 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

How will the movie pay tribute to late actor James Gandolfini?
The actor behind the legendary character of Tony Soprano, James Gandolfini, passed away in 2013. Just like how it works in the Italian mafia, the crown will be picked up by his son, Michael Gandolfini, who will play the role of a young Tony Soprano. The young actor has expressed his feelings about playing the role his late father did in an interview. He quoted:
“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano.”
When will ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ come out?
The movie was confirmed by HBO and David Chase, after much back and forth, for release in 2021. According to sources, the movie is expected to drop much later into the year, sometime around September 25.
Who will cast in the new prequel movie?
Michael Gandolfini is not the only familiar name in the casting roster of ‘The Many Saints of Newark’. Joining him will be Alessandro Nivola (Dickie Moltisanti), veteran mob films actor Ray Liotta (from ‘The Goodfellas), Jon Bernthal, Leslie Odom Jr., Corey Stoll, John Magaro, the standup comedian Joey Diaz, and many more.
