Peter Quinn died in ‘Homeland’ Season 6
For six of the ‘Homeland’ seasons, Peter Quinn served as a paramilitary officer in the CIA assigned with the task of leading a team of surveillance including Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) Max, Saul Berenson, and Virgil. Quinn and his team were responsible for reporting first-hand intel on Congressman Nicholas Brody after information about Brody’s attempt at assassinating the Vice President, William Walden, was discovered. In the ‘Homeland’ Season 6 finale, the unthinkable happened. Peter Quinn, who had successfully cheated death once before, could no longer save himself from its grip. The fans lost one of their favourite ‘Homeland’ characters as Peter Quinn made the ultimate sacrifice.

It was always known that Peter Quinn had prioritized his country first and in the season 6 finale, he did not flinch once before surrendering his life. President-elect, Elizabeth Kane, could make her appearance into the White House, but there was Quinn all behind it. Given Quinn’s headstrong traits, he probably knew that driving a car, no matter how bulletproof, into a formation of armed soldiers was a suicide mission. However, Rupert Friend, the actor who played Peter Quinn in ‘Homeland’, explained that it could have been an ambiguous judgment on the part of the character.
He told “Variety”,
“There’s a debate as to whether when he exits the parking garage and he sees the only clear way off is blocked and the only way is past two dozen soldiers with automatic rifles and he’s calculating how many bullets the bulletproof windshield can take before it will give way. There is an ambiguity there as to whether he knows in that moment, he knows for certain he can’t make it, or he’s gung-ho and he’ll make it as he always does. And it’s a surprise when he gets hit and he has to carry on. I think there is a sense of ambiguity about that”.

‘Homeland’ boss dropped hints about Quinn’s return in season 8
It was definitely hard for the ‘Homeland’ fans to accept the death of Peter Quinn until show-runner Alex Gansa teased us with a possible return of the character in season 8. Does that mean Peter Quinn could be alive? Most definitely not! While maintaining that Quinn’s manner of death was extremely definitive, Gansa explained that Quinn has not been forgotten. Such a tease from the ‘Homeland’ boss about Peter Quinn came sometime before dropping season 8. However, as it turned out Peter Quinn wasn’t physically alive in season 8 of ‘Homeland’, but more as an effect.
Gansa elaborated on how the two most important characters, Quinn and Brody, who have been killed in the series’ course of action find a place to be spiritually present with Carrie in season 8. He said,
“We went through the grieving process after Brody died, too, and Quinn managed to take Brody’s place in our fans’ hearts, and then we lost Quinn. But we lost both characters for good dramatic reasons. Carrie takes all of these people who she’s lost with her wherever she goes”.
To be a little more specific, he mentioned that Quinn and Brody’s name would be featured in the season 8 main titles and that even though they are definitely dead, they live on spiritually in all of Carrie’s actions.
Could Peter Quinn’s return make way for season 9?
Although Alex Gansa’s comments managed to get the fans all worked up about Peter Quinn returning for ‘Homeland’ season8, he is DEAD! There is no going back and he can never physically return. Moreover, season 9 does not seem like a distant possibility for ‘Homeland’ as of yet, since the creators intend to stick by their decision of keeping the spy thriller cancelled.
However, we’ll tell you what: you can always hope for a spin-off of ‘Homeland’ featuring the early years of Peter Quinn’s career. After all, we are living in the times of reboots and spin-off, and it never does any harm to dream!
