However, the blockbuster show ended its run recently, with a season finale. Let’s find out why!
Is Jane actually a virgin?
Five seasons full of slapstick comedy and happy cries, ‘Jane the Virgin’ has left its one of a kind mark in the industry. Produced by The CW Network, the critically acclaimed TV series stars Gina Rodriguez and was created by Jennie Snyder Urman. Set in Miami, the story revolves around how Gina, a hard-working, religious, young woman had vowed to be a virgin until her marriage.
In a turn of extremely surprising and dramatic events, when she is mistakenly impregnated, Jane starts to have concerns about her job and the overwhelming prospect of choosing between her baby’s father or her detective boyfriend. The biological father of the child is a married man, a former playboy, and a survivor of cancer who is not only the current owner of the hotel Jane is working in, but also her old crush from back when she was a teenager.
The series received critical acclaim particularly for the writing and story and the performance of Rodriguez. Jane the Virgin was nominated for Best TV series – Musical or Comedy – at the 72nd Golden Globe Ceremony, and Gina Rodriguez won Best Actress – The musical or comedy TV series award.
In 2014, the show was awarded the Peabody Award and also selected by the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 television programmes. The title card was updated and modified from the fourth episode of Season Three, and ‘The Virgin’ was replaced by a corresponding term referring to each episode that represented the tale that Jane is not a virgin anymore.
Jane the Virgin: All the stereotypes it broke
In the history of television, ‘Jane the Virgin’ will never be dismissed as a regular soap telenovela. Though there are potentialities of a spin-off, Jane will always be remembered; because while giving its viewers a lot of wedding, laughter and cries, it tackled several issues that are still a taboo to us. It addressed hard-hitting subjects in a way that kept the audience engaged while also appealing to their subconscious to open doors for conversations around it.
Firstly, the show portrayed three strong female leads. Unlike other female-led shows like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, ‘Jane the Virgin’ sees the three women support the idea that a lot more can be achieved if women are together, rather than against. Secondly, Jane the Virgin is one out of just 12 shows where a Latina character gets an abortion, according to Abortion On Film & TV, since usually the characters portrayed in such situations on TV are white. The show very subtly puts forward the choice of a woman in pregnancy. Additionally, it also talks about the difficulties one might face when trying for a baby.
Thirdly, Jane the Virgin was consistently praised for its handling of immigration. In 2015, showrunner, executive producer and writer Jennie Urman told BuzzFeed News:
“Immigration is something that we always knew we were going to touch on. It affects so many families in the Latino community, it’s something our country is grappling with, and it’s something that we feel strongly about in our writer’s room”.
In the show, Abuela, the strong matriarch of the family, was living illegally in the US. Urman added in the same interview that the decision that Alba would be in the country illegally was discussed right at the beginning.
Personalising issues on-screen, and playing it through the favourite characters of the audience, adds receptivity and opens up various avenues for discussion. For a change, instead of latinas being shown as gang members and operating drug cartels, Jennie has managed to one of the most meaningful portrayals of latinidad on television. Talking about inclusivity, Gina said that five years ago inclusivity wasn’t a prevalent thing.
Andrea Navedo added by saying that, when the audience sees such characters on screen, the audience resonates even more; they feel they are watching themselves. Additionally, Xiomara’s breast cancer storyline added an important insight into health – as well as its mental health implications. Jane the Virgin was one of the first series to show cold-cap therapy as a hair conservation technique through chemotherapy, on-screen.
Will you see more of ‘Jane the Virgin’ in 2021?
No you will not. And the most interesting and critical fact to be mentioned here is that, it was not CW that cancelled the show. Jane the virgin died a natural end.
The decision to end the show was a creative one and not an administrative one, i.e it was taken by the show creator herself. In April 2018, when The CW announced the fifth and the final outing of the show, it reported that it was the last.
In an interview with the NY Times, Jennie mentioned that the show was originally planned for four seasons; but halfway down season three, she realised that the show had enough content to go on for five seasons. She also added about the enormous support that she received from the network that allowed her to exercise her creativity. She said that Mark Pedowitz told her,
“Tell me when it ends. Just give me enough notice.”
The show ending did not let any end loose and got the ending it always deserved. The series provides a refreshing and new and modern view of family turns tradition upside-down and shows that strong relations are formed by blood as well as choice.
