Premiering on 4 March 2013 on ITV, the serial crime drama series ‘Broadchurch’ comprised eight gripping episodes. ‘Broadchurch’ Season 2 and season 3 continued in the same eight-episode format till 2017 with Chibnall as the executive producer and show writer. Even with a short run, the show left a lasting impression on viewers and critics alike.

With its array of small-town suspects and gripping murder mysteries, ‘Broadchurch’ created a significant wave in the dark-horror genre. At the end of season 1, the show’s twisted tale revealed Detective Inspector Ellie Miller’s husband Joe Miller to be Danny Latimer’s abuser and murderer. Also, Detective Inspector Alec Hardy’s fixation with the complicated Sandbrook case was finally resolved where Ricky Gillespie was convicted of unintentionally murdering Lisa.
Season 2 was anticlimactic in its approach. Returning to the Latimer case, the season exposed how Joe’s trial affected the townsmen. After the intense months-long courtroom drama, to the viewers’ utter shock, the season ended with Joe’s acquittance.
Although most critics believed that the season 2 ending wasn’t as powerful as that of season 1, which lifted the mask off Joe’s face, season 3 compensated well. The change of focus and introduction of new characters, barring the leads, breathed new life into the show. The crime in focus in season 3 became the rape of a woman, moving on from child murders, which were the central plot in the first two seasons. ‘Broadchurch’ episodes of season 3 end on an arc where Miller and Hardy reveal trophy-collecting taxi-driver, Clive Lucas, as the culprit. So, what will pave the way for ‘Broadchurch’ Season 4?
‘Broadchurch’ Season 4 cancelled or renewed?
While trying hard to guess the ‘Broadchurch’ Season 4 plot, the bigger question that bothered fans was – Will ‘Broadchurch’ be renewed at all or will it face the dreaded doom of cancellation?
Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any good news on the revival front. Both ITV and maker Chris Chibnall confirmed that the series will not be coming back with another season. As per them, ‘Broadchurch’ was always meant to be a trilogy with three seasons. Then again, season 3 ended on an intriguing cliffhanger which revealed that Clive had been covering for his stepson Michael.
So, if the goddess of fortune does shine on the show, the ‘Broadchurch’ Season 4 cast will comprise the lead DI pair of ‘Doctor Who’ fame British actor David Tennant and BAFTA-winning actress Olivia Colman.
Given the show’s massive success, with up to 11 million viewers tuning in for season 3, the show was given the title of “one of the most-watched crime dramas” on ITV. ‘Broadchurch’ also has the potential to be continued as a spinoff or prequel to the existing storyline. Thus, it is difficult to definitively say if the show will remain cancelled in the years to come.
Chris Chibnall says, “It’s hard to say goodbye”
When speculations around ‘Broadchurch’ Season 4 started doing rounds, show creator Chris Chibnall revealed on “BBC Radio 4”,
“That is it, and there will be no more after this one, absolutely. It’s been an extraordinary journey with the show and it has taken us all by surprise”. Chibnall added, “It’s hard to say goodbye. I’ve asked myself, ‘Why am I walking away from the two best actors in the country?’”
Speaking to “Indiewire” about the prospects of ‘Broadchurch’ Season 4, actor David Tennant said, “I think that if something has the great fortune to be a success, there’s always inevitably talk of taking it further and doing more with it, but that was never the intention”. Tennant added, “There was always the expectation that we wouldn’t overdo it simply because there’s a plausibility issue”.
For Tennant, the ‘Broadchurch’ episodes were a job well done, something that he would never like to meddle with in the years to come. Shooting down hopes for a possible ‘Hardy-Miller’ spin-off, Tennant told “Indiewire”,
“I don’t think anyone seriously talks about there being any kind of spin-off because I think we all know that that’s not what should happen. Certainly not anytime soon”.
Although the makers haven’t released an official ‘Broadchurch’ Season 4 trailer, it is absolutely safe to assume that anything is possible.
