#Kolkata: In the middle of the nationwide protest week, the Medical Service Center celebrated ‘Doctor’s Day’ in a slightly different way in Kolkata. Not taking selfies or distributing flower sweets. ‘Doctor’s Day’ was celebrated in the midst of the protest movement to get their demands met.

At the call of the Central Committee of the Medical Service Center, ‘Protest Week all over India’ is being observed from June 25 to July 2 with various demands related to health and medical education. Meanwhile, the members of the center celebrated the doctor’s day on July 1 in a slightly different way.

A protest meeting was organized by the Medical Service Center in front of the emergency gate of NRS Medical College and Hospital on Friday. ‘Doctor’s Day’ was celebrated in a procession on the hospital premises. Similarly, doctors and medical workers also celebrated the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri through protest meetings and processions.

‘Doctor’s Day’ is celebrated through the movement of doctors to demand their own. The doctors of the Medical Service Center were vocal in realizing several demands across the country on this day. But they have already made those demands to the state government through road script.

One of the demands of doctors on Doctor’s Day is,

1) Physical harassment of doctors and health workers should be stopped immediately.

2) The various attacks on medical education by the Central and State Governments, especially in the name of CBME, must be stopped.

3) NMC’s anti-people anti-student government policy should be canceled.

4) Insurance is not a medical system, I want health for everyone.

5) Corporate rule and bureaucracy will not work in health and medical education.

While doctors and medical workers are holding protest rallies and processions in various medical colleges and hospitals in the state, many who have come to hospitals and medical colleges have stood by them in this movement demanding health education for the common man on the day of doctors’ day. Student representatives from almost all the medical and dental colleges in the city joined the program, spoke and joined the procession.

The central government is attacking medical education in various ways through the NMC, doctors say. Everyone associated with the treatment thinks that the quality of education is being degraded by opening a medical college without any infrastructure.

In various protest rallies and processions, doctors and medical workers have raised their voices saying that July 1 is not just a celebration of ‘Doctor’s Day’ or the central government’s boastful Nidan is not a matter of flashy propaganda in the name of ‘Ek Selfie Doctor Ke Saath’. On the contrary, the doctors think that the celebration of ‘Doctor’s Day’ is successful only if there is a strong movement against the attack on the right to health and medical education.
