Raina (in Jio Cinema) said “I miss Dhoni & Jadeja the most from CSK team”.
Mumbai: Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has played most of his cricket under the leadership of MS Dhoni – be it playing for India or for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Ahead of the IPL 2023 season, Raina confessed that he misses Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja the most from the CSK unit. Known as Mr. IPL, Raina is one of the most prolific run-getters in the history of the league. CSK enjoyed some of their biggest success with the troika of Raina, Dhoni, and Jadeja.
“I miss MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja the most from the CSK team,” he said on Jio Cinema.
While Jadeja and Dhoni will feature in the upcoming season of the IPL, Raina will not be there in yellow as he was not retained by the franchise.
In the upcoming season, which could be Dhoni’s last, CSK would love to play some good cricket and win the title if possible. Last season was not good for the CSK as they finished in the bottom half of the table.
For the upcoming season, the total number of players in the squad is 25. Among them, 17 are Indian players, and 8 are overseas players. The remaining purse of CSK for IPL 2023 was 1.5 crores.

Bengaluru: The Indian Super League witnessed one of it’s most controversial and heated moments during their ISL Playoff match between former champions Bengaluru FC and Kerala Blasters on Friday at the Kanteerva Stadium as a controversial free-kick from India captain Sunil Chhetri forced KBFC coach Ivan Vukomanovic to call his players off the field and forfeit the match.
The incident happened during the first-half of extra-time after both the sides cannot be separated in regulation time. In the 96th minute of the game, Chhetri gave Bengaluru FC the lead from a brilliant converted free-kick before the referee signalled for the whistle. Irked by the incident, the Blasters surrounded the referee. A even more furious Ivan Vukomanovic stormed onto the field and rashly argued with ref Crystal John. The official was in no mood to change his decision and around the 100th minute mark, Ivan walked off the pitch with his players. As a result Bengaluru won the game 1-0 and will face Mumbai City FC in the semis.
After the match, as quoted by ESPN India, Chhetri informed the referee before taking the free-kick. John asked Chhetri that does he need the wall to be in place or will he need the whistle to be blown. The 38-year old made it clear that he needs none and if he sense a chance, he’ll take it anyway.
”I always ask the referee, because if he doesn’t allow it, then it won’t happen. So what happens is, they [referees] always ask – do you [need the] whistle or do you need the wall? So I said, I don’t need the wall, neither do I need the whistle. I always do it so that if I have a chance, I take it. If not, then I say, okay, fine. Get the wall [in place], get the whistle, because you always have that option”, Chhetri told after the match.
The 3rd highest active international scorer also revealed that while he was having a chat with the ref, Kerala’s Adrian Luna must’ve heard their conversation and that’s why at the first attempt, the Uruguayan footballer tried to block him before Sunil looped it into the back of the net.
”But then he [referee] said, okay, fine. And I again said, I don’t want the whistle, I don’t want the wall. He [the referee] said, ‘Are you sure?’ I said, ‘yes.’ I think Luna heard it. And that’s why he blocked once I, I had no chance. He blocked it. He knew it and he was talking to his keeper. And again, I said, there’s no chance. And I was about to ask for the wall, but then he turned and then I had the opening”, the ex East Bengal and ATK Mohun Bagan man further added.
Now lets take a look at what the rule says. During a free-kick, the taker can take it even before the whistle is blown by the ref and that’s in normal footballing term, we call it as a quick free-kick.
But it should be noted that it can be taken by the attacking side in any situation without notifying the referee either verbally or visually given that there is a distance of at least 10 yards from an opposition player so as not to block the movement of play.
This is not first time we are actually seeing a goal scored in that fashion. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry’s goal against Chelsea in 2004 and Lionel Messi’s free-kick goal against Atletico Madrid back in the 2008-09 season were scored in the exact same way and both were counted as goals.
Let’s take an example of Henry’s goal. The referee of that London Derby match Graham Poll defended his decision by saying that a set-piece around the penalty area always prompts the referees to ask the takers whether they want to attempt a quick free-kick or a slow one, even if the goalkeeper or the players organising the wall are not ready.
”With a free-kick around the penalty area we always ask the players whether they want it quick or slow”, Poll told as quoted as saying by footballhandbook.com.
“He [The refereel] said: ‘Do you want to wait for the whistle and [the wall to go] 10 yards?’ I said: ‘No.’ So he said: ‘You can have a go,’ so I was just waiting for Gudjohnsen to move out of the way. The referee allowed me to do it”, Henry shared what exactly happened before the goal.
So in case of a quick free-kick around the penalty area, whether the wall is 10 yards away from the taker or not, it doesn’t really matter. If the referee gets the green signal for a quick one after clarifying from the taker, he will allow it anyway and there’s no need for a whistle to be blown.
Mumbai, Mar 3: Gujarat Giants’ captain Beth Mooney does not have a lot of experience as a leader but with former opening partner Rachael Haynes as the head coach to support her, she is confident of pulling off something special during inaugural edition of Women’s Premier League.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind. I’ve only been here for 36 hours,” revealed Mooney to the media on Friday evening ahead of the team’s first match on Saturday, against the Mumbai Indians.
“I met the coaching staff and the players. Everyone’s very excited to get going. I am absolutely thrilled and pumped to be here and be a part of the first game,” said Mooney, who played a match-winning knock for Australia in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa.
Despite having less experience as a leader in the WBBL, Mooney said she puts her trust in the head coach Rachael Haynes.
“It’s (captaincy) certainly wasn’t something that was on my radar. When I got bid on in the auction I was happy to be a part of it and get picked up by a team.
“I know Rachael Haynes quite well and to be able to work with her pretty closely, she is in her first ever job as a head coach. I haven’t done a lot of captaincy recently but I did a fair bit of it when I was a lot younger. I have got a little bit of experience and I trust Rachael and her judgement and I was more than happy to help her out,” she added.
Mooney said she wants the players to showcase what women’s cricket can do to the world.
“I have had a run through the squad with Rachael (Haynes), Mithali (Raj) and Noosh (Nooshin Al Khadeer). We have got a very exciting and skilled group. I’m looking forward to seeing the girls showcase their skills and show the world what women’s cricket can actually do,” Mooney said.
Sanjay Manjrekar SLAMS Rohit Sharma’s Strategy to Promote Ravindra Jadeja During 3rd Test in Indore
Ind vs Aus: Claiming that it did not make sense to him, Manjrekar claimed that Iyer is good against the spinners.
Sanjay Manjrekar SLAMS Rohit Sharma
Indore: The pitch at Indore was the centre of it all as 30 wickets fell in the first two days during the third Test. Just to counter the spin threat from Australia, India captain Rohit Sharma also promoted Ravindra Jadeja ahead of Shreyas Iyer. While the ploy did not work, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar slammed the India captain over the decision. Claiming that it did not make sense to him, Manjrekar claimed that Iyer is good against the spinners.
“It has just disappointed me in the last and this innings as well that Jadeja came ahead of Shreyas Iyer. You can’t be doing that for left-right combination. You’ve got a proper batter…even if he is a right hander. And Jadeja coming in as a left-hander…I can understand when you have 2-3 left-arm spinners like Bangladesh used to have in the past. Here you have two quality off-spinners bowling. It did not make any sense to me. Iyer has a great feel for spinners so you want him ahead in the line-up. And he has shown his class,” he said on Star Sports at the end of Day 2.
Citing the example o bringing back Mitchell Starc against Iyer, Manjrekar went on to hail Steve Smith for his leadership at Indore.
“Great captaincy too from Australia’s Steve Smith in the way he got Starc into the attack. They realised Iyer is so good against spin, let’s try him against pace,” he said.
Australia in a good position to win the game as they need 76 runs to win the third Test.
Virat Kohli is Feeling The Pressure – Mark Waugh States After Dismissal at Indore During 3rd Test Between Ind-Aus
Ind vs Aus: Following his dismissal, former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh found it hard to believe that a player of Kohli’s stature has gone without a Test century for 1195 days and 41 innings.
Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Dinesh Karthik Slams Virat Kohli For Poor Shot Selection
Indore: Virat Kohli is arguably the best batter of the generation and hence questions are asked whenever he fails with the bat. After getting his eye in at Indore during the second innings, Kohli was dismissed for 13 off 26 balls. He was trapped LBW by Matthew Kuhnemann. Following his dismissal, former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh found it hard to believe that a player of Kohli’s stature has gone without a Test century for 1195 days and 41 innings.
“I cannot believe a player of his class has gone that long without a hundred,” former Australia batter Mark Waugh said on Fox Cricket.
“He’s been in good touch recently, he’s batted well in one-day cricket. I know it’s not Test match cricket, but the signs have been there in his last three innings in Test cricket that he’s actually playing pretty well.
“He’s middling the ball, he’s watching the ball well, and his defence is strong. He’s just making the odd error and it’s proving costly for him. He hasn’t had a lot of luck. He makes one mistake and he’s out.
Meanwhile, India was bowled out for 163 in the second innings right on stumps after Lyon’s incredible eight-wicket haul. The host set Australia 76 runs to earn a rare test win in India after losing the first two tests of the series.
Lyon’s second-best career figures are the second best in India, too, after his 8-50 in Bengaluru in 2017. He is Australia’s highest wicket-taker in India.
Cheteshwar Pujara’s fighting 59 gave India some hope, but it was mainly 61 overs of grim cricket for the hosts.
Gunmen Threaten Messi, Open Fire On Family-Owned Supermarket
Lionel Messi received a threatening letter as gunmen opened fire at a supermarket owned by his in-laws in Argentina, police said.

Buenos Aires: Gunmen threatened Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi in a written message left Thursday when they opened fire at a supermarket owned by his in-laws in Argentina, police said. Nobody was injured in the early morning attack, and it was unclear why assailants would target Messi or the Unico supermarket in the country’s third-largest city of Rosario, owned by the family of his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo.
The city’s mayor, Pablo Javkin, went to the supermarket and lashed out at federal authorities over what he called their failure to curb a surge in drug-related violence in Rosario, located about 190 miles (300 kilometers) northwest of the capital of Buenos Aires.
Police said two men on a motorcycle fired at least a dozen shots into an Unico branch in the early hours, leaving a message on carboard that read, “Messi, we’re waiting for you. Javkin is also a drug trafficker, so he won’t take care of you.”
Messi has not commented. Considered by many to the greatest soccer player of all time, Messi is revered in Argentina, especially since he led the national team to the country’s first World Cup victory in 36 years in Qatar in December.
Messi currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain and spends much of his time overseas, though he often visits Rosario where he has a home in the suburb of Funes. The French team posted a photo on social media of Messi training on Thursday morning.
In Rosario, prosecutor Federico Rébola said authorities were reviewing security camera footage and that the investigation was “preliminary.” It was the first time Messi’s in-laws had received this kind of threat, he added.
Celia Arena, justice minister for Santa Fe province, where Rosario is located, said the attack amounted to “terrorism” by a “mafia” group meant to intimidate the broader population.
“The aim is to deliberately cause terror in the population and discourage those of us who are fighting against criminal violence, knowing that it will be an event of global significance,” Arena wrote in a social media post.
Javkin, a center-left politician in opposition to the ruling Peronist coalition, appeared to throw suspicion of complicity for the attack on both criminal gangs and federal security officials.
“I doubt everyone, even those who are supposed to protect us,” Javkin said in an interview with a local radio station.
He said that he had recently had “very strong discussions” with members of the federal security forces over the past couple of weeks demanding that they crack down on the city’s crime.
“Where are the ones who need to take care of us?” Javkin said. “It’s clear that those who have the weapons and have the possibility of investigating the criminals aren’t doing it, and it’s very easy for any gang to carry out something like this.”
The federal government’s Security Minister Aníbal Fernández said drug-related violence was not a recent phenomenon in the city, and that Thursday’s attack was typical of what has happened there “for the last 20 years.” He said the incident was an example of how drug traffickers “have won” in Rosario, but now “we have to reverse that.”
Opposition politicians blamed President Alberto Fernández’s administration for the continuing violence in Rosario. His predecessor, Mauricio Macri, characterized the events as a warning that the country cannot “co-exist” with drug traffickers.
Messi, 35, is currently renegotiating a contract with Paris Saint-Germain that ends this year amid speculation that the soccer superstar could decide to end his career playing for one of the local Rosario clubs, Newell’s.
Messi, who this week won FIFA’s best men’s player award, could travel to Argentina later this month to join the national squad in playing two friendly matches. One takes place March 23 against Panama in Buenos Aires, while the other one will be five days later against Curacao in the northern city of Santiago del Estero.
