Lucknow: Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar finally broke his silence on the Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir brawl that dominated proceedings at the Ekana stadium on Monday when the Royal Challengers Bangalore locked horns with Lucknow Super Giants. Claiming that what had happened is not called for, Gavaskar suggested it is best to suspend Kohli and Gambhir for a few games.
“Well, I saw the visuals only a while ago, I did not see the match live yesterday. These things never look good. What is a 100 per cent match fee? What exactly is a 100 per cent match fee? If it is Kohli, who is on maybe ₹17 crore for RCB, which means ₹17 crore for a possible 16 matches, including the semi-finals, and finals. So you are talking about a crore of rupees. Is he going to be fined ₹1 crore and more? Well, that’s a very, very stiff fine,” Gavaskar said in a conversation on Star Sports.
“So, my point, do something which will make sure, these things don’t happen again. If it has to you know, like it happened with Harbhajan and Sreesanth 10 years ago, that you have to ask them to maybe step aside for a couple of matches. Make sure you do something that ensures that these things don’t happen and also something that will hurt the team. That’s a stiff one,” he added.
Meanwhile, RCB won the game by 18 runs to keep their hopes of making the playoffs alive. Kohli and Gambhir were slapped fines for the breach of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Ahmedabad: It was another low-scoring affair in IPL 2023 which went right down to the wire on Tuesday. Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans by five runs at the Narendra Modi stadium to keep their chances of making it through to the playoffs alive. Among many heroes, veteran Ishant Sharma turned out to be the hero for the Capitals. It was down to 12 needed off the last over and Rahul Tewatia was looking all set to take the Titans over the line. Veteran Ishan was given the responsibility to defend the 12 runs and he did it successfully. After the win, Ishant revealed his ploy against Tewatia. Claiming that it was fun bowling to Tewatia, Ishant said he knew he had to double-bluff the batter.
“I played enough cricket him (Tewatia), so was just having fun with him. I knew I had to double bluff him otherwise we know what he can do with the bat,” Ishant said after the match.
Earlier, the Capitals overcame Hardik Pandya’s fighting unbeaten fifty (59 not out) and Mohammed Shami’s four-fer (4-11) to beat Gujarat Titans.
Despite the win, Delhi Capitals stayed at the bottom of the points table but they have kept themselves alive in the tournament with three victories in nine matches. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans, who have six wins in nine matches, are at the top of the points table despite the loss.
Seasoned pacer Shami’s sensational four-fer helped Gujarat Titans restrict Delhi Capitals to 130/8 in 20 overs despite a fighting fifty from Aman Hakim Khan (51 off 44). Apart from Shami, Mohit Sharma (2-33) and Rashid Khan (1-28) were the other wicket-takers for Titans while Axar Patel (27 off 30) and Ripal Patel (23 off 13) were the other main contributors with the bat after Aman.
Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 130/8 in 20 overs (Aman Hakim Khan 51, Axar Patel 27; Md Shami 4-11, Mohit Sharma 2-33) beat Gujarat Titans 125/6 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 59 not out, Abhinav Manohar 26; Ishant Sharma 2-23, Khaleel Ahmed 2-24) by 5 runs.

AS IT HAPPENED | Gujarat Titans vs Delhi Capitals, IPL 2023
Ahmedabad: Skipper Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten fifty (59 not out) and Mohammed Shami’s four-fer (4-11) went in vain as Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans by five runs in Match No. 44 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at Narendra Modi Stadium, here on Tuesday.
Chasing a small total, Delhi Capitals also had a poor start as they lost three wickets inside the Power-play and scored just 31 runs. It was Khaleel Ahmed, who drew first blood for Delhi Capitals by getting Wriddhiman Saha caught behind for a duck in the last delivery of the very first over of the innings.
Skipper Hardik Pandya walked into the middle to give company to Shubman Gill, who started well by hitting a boundary off Ishant Sharma. However, Anrich Nortje was introduced in the attack soon and he dismissed Gill, who timed the ball straight to the cover fielder.
Vijay Shankar has been in good form this season and Gujarat had high hopes from him but Ishant bowled a brilliant knuckleball to get rid of the Tamil Nadu batter, leaving Titans in a precarious position at 26-3 after 4.6 overs.
Defending champions Gujarat needed a partnership to rebuild their innings but new man David Miller tried to play a cute paddle sweep off Kuldeep Yadav but was bowled, adding misery to his team’s position.
Gujarat Titans were 32-4 when Miller got out and Hardik was watching his batting partners going back to the pavilion one after another. The skipper needed some support and it came from Abhinav Manohar.
The duo of Hardik and Abhinav played cautiously against spin twins Kuldeep and Axar Patel, who were bowling nicely to keep things in control for Delhi. After bowling a few overs of spin, Warner went back to his pacers and they also bowled well barring giving a few boundaries here and there as the required run rate was going up with each passing over.
Hardik and Abhinav continued to grind runs out while Warner was bringing in the bowling changes in search of breakthroughs and not letting the batters settle down as Gujarat Titans were 71/4 after 14 overs.
With the required run rate increasingly sharp, Pandya decided to free his arms and got a few boundaries to get his fifty in 44 balls but Abhinav was not able to find boundaries and his struggle was ended by Khaleel Ahmed in the first ball of the 18th over. Khaleel executed his slower ones and yorkers to perfection and gave just four runs in his over, making things tougher for Gujarat.
Anrich Nortje came to bowl the 19th over with Gujarat needing 33 runs in 12 balls. The pacer conceded just three runs in the first three balls but Tewatia had other plans and he hit Nortje for three consecutive sixes, to bring the equation in Gujarat’s favour.
With 12 runs needed of 6 balls for Gujarat to win, experienced Ishant had the big task in hand but he held his nerve, dismissed Tewatia and gave just 5 runs to win it for Delhi Capitals.
Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 130/8 in 20 overs (Aman Hakim Khan 51, Axar Patel 27; Md Shami 4-11, Mohit Sharma 2-33) beat Gujarat Titans 125-6 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 59 not out, Abhinav Manohar 26; Ishant Sharma 2-23, Khaleel Ahmed 2-24) by 5 runs.

Lucknow: If Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir’s spat made fans on Monday night feeling sad for the gentleman’s game, there was another moment from the match at the Ekna stadium that is winning hearts. After the match was over, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer Mohammed Siraj walked up to KL Rahul and asked him about his injury out of concern while giving him a hug. Rahul had picked up the injury near the ropes trying to save a boundary. He had to be taken off the field. Despite coming back to bat with the team in trouble, he did not look comfortable during his stay at the crease.
Here is the picture that is going viral:
Mohammad Siraj hugged KL Rahul after the match and asked him how he’s doing.
Earlier, Josh Hazlewood and Karn Sharma picked two wickets each in a superb bowling performance as Royal Challengers Bangalore defended a modest 126 and beat Lucknow Super Giants by 18 runs at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Monday.
Apart from the duo, Mohammed Siraj, Glenn Maxwell, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Harshal Patel took a wicket each to bowl out Bangalore for 108 in 19.5 overs. KL Rahul, Jaydev Unadkat’s Injuries New Headache For India Ahead Of WTC Final Vs Australia
KL Rahul pulled his hip flexor muscle but the extent of his injury is yet to be ascertained. Jaydev Unadkat suffered a shoulder injury during training.

Lucknow: Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul and his team’s veteran left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat seem to have sustained serious injuries which could render them doubtful for the high-profile World Test Championship final against Australia at the Oval from June 7-11.
Senior Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rahul sustained the injury on his right thigh during the IPL 2023 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday. Rahul limped off the field with the help of the team physio and a teammate, who was in the reserve.
He was finding it difficult to walk and lay on the ground writhing in pain for quite sometime after what seemed like a pulled thigh muscle while chasing a ball racing to the boundary. He first held his right thigh and limped before collapsing onto the ground.
The injury happened off the last ball of the second over when Faf du Plessis punched a Marcus Stoinis delivery through the extra cover region and Rahul sprinted to save an imminent boundary.
It was vice-captain Krunal Pandya, who took charge with Ayush Badoni coming out to open alongside Kyle Mayers. Pandya said Rahul pulled his hip flexor muscle but the extent of his injury is yet to be ascertained. Rahul came out to bat as the last man but couldn’t run.
He could play only three balls without scoring. “It is a sad thing. He (Rahul) pulled his hip flexor, I guess. I do not know how bad it is. The medical team will assess it,” Pandya said at the post-match presentation.
A day before the game, his teammate Unadkat slipped badly while bowling at the nets and it resulted in a nasty fall with the entire weight of his body on his left shoulder. Unadkat was in pain and the team physio was seen putting ice-pack on the injured area.
It is still not known if it’s a dislocation and whether he needs to report to the National Cricket Academy.
Replacement Options: Arshdeep, Yashashvi, Kishan
The Indian team hasn’t made its stand-by list official for the WTC final. KS Bharat has always been their first-choice keeper and not Rahul. They can bolster the batting by taking the in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has a double hundred and hundred in Irani Cup.
The other top-order option is Abhimanyu Easwaran while keeping option is Ishan Kishan, who has been initially dropped because Rahul is in squad of 15.
In case Unadkat sustains a dislocation, then he could be out for a good two-month period and the only quality left-arm option available for the team management is Arshdeep Singh, who is supposed to play for English county Kent in June, after the IPL gets over.
The other options are right-armers — Mukesh Kumar and Navdeep Saini — but they will also be in reckoning as Umesh Yadav (dodgy hamstring) and Shardul Thakur (unknown niggle) also don’t seem to be in the best of shape.
