Better Call Saul’s newest episode will break your heart in the most unexpected way possible when Nacho Varga meets his fate.
The first two episodes of Better Call Saul’s sixth season revolved all-around Nacho Varga. With so much happening around him and the entire cartel running for his blood, it was obvious that he is going to have a tragic fate. But, this writer wasn’t sure that it would happen all so soon and in such an out of the box manner.
Better Call Saul is getting crazier
Better Call Saul’s finale season is turning out to be the show that we expected. It is getting better and better with every passing episode. The first two episodes particularly developed Nacho Varga’s character and as soon as we had started sympathising with him, he is no more in the show.
The third episode opened where the second episode left, Varga was driving a wretched car that he stole to escape the Salamanca Twins, which broke in the middle of nowhere. Then he hid in the tanker and somehow survived when the twins came looking for him.
With all of this happening and everyone in the cartel hunting for Nacho Varga, it was starting to seem that he wouldn’t make it till the end. But, Breaking Bad has taught us that anything can happen in this franchise and with Mike Ehrmantraut on his side, he might survive.
Nacho Varga is no more in the show
The moment Varga called Mike Ehrmantraut after talking to his father, it seemed something was about to change. In the same call when he spoke to Gus Fring and agreed on sacrificing himself to save him in front of the cartel just in return for his father’s life, it seemed it’s an end to Michael Mando in the series.
Still, Mike travelling with Fring and Varga in the same van and stopping by at a height with a sniper gave a vibe that the tables might turn and Nacho might survive. And, till the time Mando’s character gave his brutal speech to Don Hector (Mark Margolis) and then stole Juan Bolsa’s (Javier Grajeda) gun it seemed Varga wasn’t going anywhere. But, then he shot himself out of the blue and the episode ended.
Kim Wexler and Saul Goodman continue their business
All of this chaos is happening on one side, then there’s another side where the attorneys are planning a valet heist. Here, Jimmy takes help from his old friend, Huell, to duplicate Howard Hamlin’s car keys.
While Kim Wexler and Saul Goodman are planning to con Howard, Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Ericsen reaches out to Wexler to discuss Jimmy’s history and the history of his clients. Ericsen had discovered that Jorge de Guzman and Lalo are the same people. She signalled towards the direction that Jimmy’s representing Nacho and Tuco Salamanca seems like he is working with the drug cartel.
At last, Jimmy is given a choice to either be a friend of the cartel or be a rat. There’s no final word from the lawyer yet, but he is more likely to stick to his status, after all, there’s a lot of money in that business.
The show is completely walking in Breaking Bad’s footsteps where we don’t know what might happen in the next moment. So, whatever happens in Better Call Saul it will have brutal repercussions. It would be fascinating to see how Varga’s shooting himself turns out for the forthcoming episodes. And, where do Kim Wexler and Saul Goodman end up with their valet heist?
Now, when we know Walter White and Jesse Pinkman will return in this season, that makes every episode more happening and we are waiting to see how they make their debut and under what circumstance.
The fourth episode of Better Call Saul’s sixth season, Hit and Run will release on 2nd May 2022.
Episode 5 of Moon Knight showed Marc and Steven explore their past while sailing across the Egyptian underworld.
Episode 5 of Moon Knight showed Marc Spector and Steven Grant trying to balance their scales. If they can’t, they will rot in hell. And the only way to way to do it is to delve further into their past.
Episode 4 of Moon Knight brought Marc Spector and Steven Grant face to face with Goddess Tawaret. And she revealed that they are in the Real of the Duat, one of the many realms of the afterlife. She also says that since the human mind isn’t able to wrap its head around the Duat, it perceives the realm as something it can more easily recognize. Sure enough, Marc and Steven perceive it as a psych ward apparently because their mental stability, or rather instability is the one thing that they both have come face to face with.
So indeed, it seems that Marc’s mind is trying to make sense of the state it is in, and in that endeavor, it is swinging between the Duat and the fantasy of Dr. Harrow’s clinic. Marc’s experiences before his death and the people involved in them have all been carried forward by Marc’s mind, in a way it can, to its easiest conceivable version of the Duat. Read that again.
Tawaret also mentions that Duat is one of the many realms of the afterlife. She also mentions the “gorgeous” Ancestral Plane. We all know we have heard this phrase earlier, right? The Ancestral Plane is the afterlife realm where T’Challa was sent to meet his father T’Chaka, during his coronation ceremony in Black Panther (2018). And it makes sense for Tawaret to mention this plane of all other planes because this plane is ruled by Bast, the Panther God, who is also a member of the Ennead in the comics, although not shown in the show. However, we did see the statue of Bast after Steven and Layla entered the tomb of Ammit in Moon Knight Episode 4.
Is that Jake Lockley?
There is a scene when Marc Spector and Dr Harrow are talking to each other. Dr Harrow was talking to him about how “organizing principle”. At this point, Marc reacts and it is visibly clear that he isn’t himself anymore. His accent has changed and even his voice has changed somewhat. But this personality isn’t Steven either. So is this the third personality i.e. Jake Lockley? He picks up a sharp paperweight as if to attack Harrow. This shows that he is dangerous and might as well be the one who killed all those goons sent by Harrow. Remember how both Marc and Steven denied killing them? This was right before Khonshu caused the sun’s eclipse in Moon Knight Episode 3.
The Scales of Justice
Tawaret weighs the hearts of Marc and Steven (which are basically two parts of the same heart) against the Feather of Truth on the Scales of Justice. If the scale remains unbalanced by the time they reach the Field of Reeds, both Marc and Steven will be dragged by the dead into the Duat where they will be frozen in the sands forever.
In Egyptian mythology, it is not Tawaret but Anubis, God of the Dead, who measures the heart on the scales. And Ammit, the Devourer of the Dead, is the one who “devours” the souls of those whose scales aren’t balanced which is proof that their hearts are unworthy.
Moon Knight Origin Revealed
While exploring their memories to find a way to balance their scales, Marc and Steven stumble upon the fateful night of Marc’s death. This is when we get the firsthand revelation of how Marc Spector became the Moon Knight. Marc was working with his Commanding Officer Bushman (Raul Bushman if we follow the comics) and they were going to raid a tomb. Bushman wanted no witnesses and thus killed all of those present at the site including Dr. El Faouly, Layla’s father. It was when Marc tried to stop him that he was shot by Bushman. And the rest, we all know.
Marc Spector’s Childhood Trauma
Episode 5 of Moon Knight finally into Marc’s past and tells us what led to his dissociative identity disorder. Marc and his younger brother Randall used to play in the caves during their childhood. And one day while playing, Randall drowns as a result of rainfall that filled up the cave. Since then, Marc’s mother Wendy held him responsible for Randall’s death. We see her beating Marc. And this has gone on for days and years until one day little Marc subconsciously brings forth Steven. Steven is a window for Marc to cope with the pain, the rage, and the trauma.
Interestingly, Dr. Harrow (another figment of Marc’s mind) questions Marc whether he has created Steven to hide from all the bad things he has done in his life. This is partially true and partially false. Partially true because Steven is indeed a way for Marc to hide from all the murders he has committed. Partially false because Marc was a kid when he created Steven, so it would take him many years to become a mercenary and start killing people for money. However, we must also consider the possibility that one of the crimes that Marc holds himself responsible for, that led him to give way to Steven, is the death of his brother.
Two Become One
A tragic yet beautiful scene is when Steven is consoling Marc when they see the memory of the death of his mother. Marc left home after being traumatized by her mother for a long time and never returned. Upon knowing that his mother has passed away, he is grief-stricken. Not only has Marc been unable to see his mother for the last time but he was also unable to prove himself to her. The pain he feels is clearly visible.
This memory gets the present Marc in tears. And we see Steven consoling him and telling him how his brother’s death wasn’t his fault. We see here, one version of the human mind consoling its other version. What’s more tragic is the fact that the part consoling is the one that came into being as a result of the pain of the part being consoled. It is a beautifully-portrayed scene that, in a way, let Marvel up its own ante in the psychological genre of superhero shows and movies.
Death of Steven Grant
At the end of Episode 5 of Moon Knight, Steven Grant is pulled out of Tawaret’s ship by the dead. And ultimately turns to sand. So does this mean that Marc’s mind has finally let go of Steven’s identity and is one with itself? The scales get leveled after this. And this is something that can only happen when the heart is balanced against the feather of truth. With Marc revealing to Steven his origin, Marc comes to terms with himself thus becoming whole.
Is Marc Spector Dead?
With Steven gone and the Scales of Justice balanced, Marc ultimately moves on to the Field of Reeds (heaven). And perhaps the only way for him to get his life back (again) is to request Osiris, the ruler of the Duat. Moreover, Osiris was one of the Ennead’s members who imprisoned Khonshu. So he also holds the power to bring him back. Marc must do all in his power to convince Osiris to let him and Khonshu free so that they can stop Harrow. If they can’t, Ammit will rise again and many innocent people will have to die (the process has already begun).
But hold on a minute. If Osiris does give them both their life back, won’t Khonshu have complete control over Marc now that Steven is no more? After all, Khonshu never liked when Steven interfered between him and Marc during times of crisis. Marc is vulnerable to Khonshu presently. We have to wait to see how they are able to work together and if Moon Knight does save Layla and stop Harrow.
Moon Knight finale episode arrives on May 4, 2022.
