Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said Sunday that he believes the Justice Department will charge former President Donald Trump after the House Jan. 6 committee concluded its investigation detailing his pressure campaign to overturn the election.
“If this is not a crime, I don’t know what is. If a president can incite an insurrection and not be held accountable, then really there’s no limit to what a president can do or can’t do,” Kinzinger, a member of the Jan. 6 committee, said during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“I think the Justice Department will do the right thing. I think he will be charged, and I frankly think he should be,” he continued, pointing to the findings of the committee’s formal report from its 18-month investigation into the deadly Capitol riot.
Kinzinger said he believes the former president should be charged and convicted based on the evidence the committee uncovered.
“If he is not guilty of a crime, then I frankly fear for the future of this country because now every future president of this country can say here’s the bar — do everything you can to stay in power,” Kinzinger said.
Kinzinger, who decided against seeking reelection, was one of two GOP lawmakers who served on the Jan. 6 committee. The panel is set to dissolve when Republicans retake the House in the new Congress.
The full report details the committee’s arguments that largely blame the former president and his false claims of widespread election fraud for the Jan. 6 attack.
Trump has repeatedly accused the committee of being driven by partisan politics. At the time of the criminal referrals, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung responded by repeating a statement the campaign has used previously, calling the panel a “Kangaroo court” that “held show trials by Never Trump partisans who are a stain on this country’s history.”

Around 190 people suffered from food poisoning with one of them in a serious condition after allegedly taking meals during a baptism event in a church near Keezhvaipur in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.
Thiruvananthapuram: More than 100 people suffered from suspected food poisoning with one of them in a serious condition after allegedly taking meals during a baptism event in a church near Keezhvaipur in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. State Health Minister Veena George ordered an enquiry into the incident. The probe is to be done by the Food Safety Department that has been asked to submit a report immediately.
Food was served by a catering firm at the function on Thursday and sources who attended the function said that around 190 people had taken the food. Almost all of them had vomiting and diarrhoea. However, 70 people who had vomited extensively and had stomach ailments were admitted to the hospital.
However, the food catering unit told media persons that they had served food at two other places on the same day at Parumala in Pathanamthitta itself but there were no complaints.
The family who held the baptism event told media persons that they would be lodging a complaint with the authorities on the quality of poor and ill-quality food served by the catering firm.
The police said they filed a case against the caterers who provided the meals. Food samples were collected and sent for testing. The person, presently serious, is in a hospital, while the rest are out of danger.

BEIJING, Dec. 31, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — From medical professionals to delivery men and women, from community workers to next-door neighbors, ordinary Chinese people are doing their best and lending a hand to help others cope with the latest waves of COVID-19 infections in the country.
With extraordinary efforts, China has prevailed over unprecedented difficulties and challenges in fighting the pandemic, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Saturday while delivering his 2023 New Year Address.
Officials and the general public, particularly medical professionals and community workers, have bravely stuck to their posts through it all, Xi said.
“It has not been an easy journey for anyone,” he said, calling for an extra effort from the people to pull through.
People first, life first
In 2022, China continued to optimize its COVID response in light of the evolving situation. Based on the mutation of the virus, the popularization of vaccination and the accumulation of experience in prevention and control, the National Health Commission said in December that the country’s epidemic prevention and control has entered a new stage.
Shifting from infection prevention to medical treatment, China has rolled out a host of measures to boost access to medical treatment and drugs, improve health services for the elderly and other vulnerable groups, speed up vaccination, and beef up health infrastructure in rural areas.
Seventy percent of those aged over 60 had received a booster dose of vaccines as of December 13, up from less than 53 percent among the age group of the population by March 24, according to data from the State Council Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism Against COVID-19.
In addition, the relaxation of the response policy in 2022 comes after China has effectively responded to five global COVID waves and avoided widespread infections with the original strain and the Delta variant, which are relatively more pathogenic than the other variants.
“Since COVID-19 struck, we have put the people first and put life first all along,” Xi said during his New Year Address.
“Following a science-based and targeted approach, we have adapted our COVID response in light of the evolving situation to protect the life and health of the people to the greatest extent possible,” he added.
China has kept its severe COVID-19 cases and death rates among the lowest in the world. The average life expectancy of the Chinese has continued to rise amid the pandemic, from 77.93 years in 2020 to 78.2 years in 2021.
Light right in front
Starting January 8, China will downgrade management of the disease from Class A to Class B in accordance with the country’s law on prevention and treatment of infectious disease, in a major shift of its epidemic response policies. The country will also scrap quarantine measures for inbound travelers from the day.
Following the announcement of the latest adjustments, searches and bookings for international flights and hotels rocketed on multiple Chinese online travel agencies, with some numbers hitting three-year highs, indicating that normal life is picking up.
Another sign that experts believe bodes the revival of the country’s consumption market in 2023, restaurants, shopping malls and cinemas nationwide have reopened and reported burgeoning visits.
“Everyone is holding on with great fortitude, and the light of hope is right in front of us,” Xi said during Saturday’s address to ring in the new year.
“Let’s make an extra effort to pull through, as perseverance and solidarity mean victory.”

The killings of four University of Idaho students in mid-November at an off-campus residence stunned the small community of Moscow, Idaho, where investigators grappled with what the town’s police chief would later describe as a “very complex” case.
No suspect was immediately named in the deaths of housemates Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Xana Kernodle, 20, as well as Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20. Nor was a murder weapon, believed to be a large fixed-blade knife, found.
“This is not the end of this investigation,” Latah County prosecuting attorney Bill Thompson said at a news conference announcing the arrest. “In fact, this is a new beginning.”
Here’s a timeline of key moments in the case.
Nov. 12
From around 9 p.m., Kernodle and Chapin are seen at a party at Chapin’s fraternity, Sigma Chi, a short walk from the King Road house, according to investigators.
That night, Goncalves uploads pictures to her Instagram account featuring photos of the friends with the caption, “One lucky girl to be surrounded by these pple everyday.”
At about 10 p.m., Goncalves and Mogen go to a sports bar in Moscow, The Corner Club.
Investigators say Kernodle and Chapin return to the three-level apartment house on King Road at about 1:45 a.m., while Goncalves and Mogen take a car home, arriving at about 1:56 a.m.
Meanwhile, two other housemates who had gone out that night had come home prior to the others, at about 1 a.m., Moscow police say.
At 11:58 a.m., a 911 call is placed on the cellphone of one of the other housemates requesting assistance for an “unconscious person.” (Both housemates are unharmed.)
Police alert the public about the deaths in a news release and while they say no one is in custody, they do “not believe there is an ongoing community risk based on information gathered during the preliminary investigation.”
Nov. 16
With no suspect apprehended, Moscow police walk back previous comments that there is no threat to the largely rural city of almost 26,000 residents.
“We do not have a suspect at this time, and that individual is still out there,” Moscow Police Chief James Fry says at a news conference. He adds that the more than 25 investigators with the Idaho State Police and the FBI are assisting in the case.
Nov. 17
Preliminary autopsy results show that the four victims were likely attacked with a large knife and died sometime after 2 a.m. from multiple stab wounds, Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt says.
She describes their wounds as “pretty extensive.”
Nov. 18
Police say the victims were most likely asleep when they were slain, and some of them had defensive wounds. There was also no sign of sexual assault.
Meanwhile, detectives seize the contents of three dumpsters near the home to search for possible evidence, and they contact local businesses to determine if a knife was recently purchased.
Nov. 30
A vigil is held at the University of Idaho in honor of the victims, with some family members in attendance.
“We’re going to get our justice,” Steven Goncalves, Kaylee’s father, says, adding that his daughter and Mogen had been best friends since the sixth grade and learned that they were in the same bed when they were killed.
“They went to high school together, then they started looking at colleges, they came here together. They eventually get into the same apartment together,” Goncalves said. “And in the end, they died together.”
Dec. 1
Moscow police reaffirm the quadruple homicide was part of a “targeted attack,” after authorities appeared to suggest the opposite.
“We remain consistent in our belief that this was indeed a targeted attack but have not concluded if the target was the residence or its occupants,” a police spokesperson says.
The department also continues to dispel online rumors and speculation, and says it has cleared certain people seen interacting with Goncalves and Mogen on the evening they were killed. Police also say the two housemates who were home during the attack had been sleeping that night.
Dec. 2
The two housemates, Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen, release letters saying they are struggling to accept why the lives of “four beautiful people” were taken so brutally.
Dec. 5
Detectives focus on Chapin’s and Kernodle’s activities on the evening they were killed, and ask the public for information about the nearly five hours from when the couple arrived at the Sigma Chi party to the apartment house on King Road.
Dec. 6
Police say they recognize how frustrating the lack of news can be for the families and the public, but insist they do not want to jeopardize the case.
“We are at that point in the investigation where we’re still gathering information, we’re still gathering tips, we’re still gathering evidence, we’re still doing everything we need to do,” Fry says in a video posted online.
Dec. 7
Police begin removing personal items of the victims from the apartment house and returning them to the families.
They also announce what appears to be an integral part of the investigation: They say they are looking to speak with any occupants of a white Hyundai Elantra from 2011-13 with unknown license plates. They do not say whether they believe the driver is linked to the killer but say that person may have “critical information” to share.
Dec. 15
Kristi Goncalves, Kaylee’s mother, expresses frustration during an interview with NBC’s “TODAY” show that she only learned about police’s interest in the Hyundai Elentra when the rest of the public did — underscoring frustrations that some victims’ families feel “left in the dark.”
Dec. 21
Fry tells NBC News that his department is in daily contact with families and “we asked them to be patient” as the investigation progresses. The police chief again insists the investigation is not a cold case, and “our end goal is to bring somebody to justice for those families and for those victims.”
Dec. 30
Police announce an arrest of a suspect: Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, a resident of Pullman, Washington, and a doctoral student at Washington State University. He is apprehended in northeastern Pennsylvania, about 2,500 miles from the Idaho campus.
According to two law enforcement sources, DNA evidence played a key role in linking the murders to Kohberger. He is expected to appear in court on Jan. 3 for an extradition hearing.
At a news conference, Fry says he believes Kohberger is the only suspect.
“What I can tell you is that we have an individual in custody who committed these horrible crimes,” he says, “and I do believe our community is safe.”
