As the fans are eagerly awaiting the second season of ‘The Witcher’, some book loyalists are complaining about Henry Cavill being too good-looking to be playing Geralt!

The books were great and ‘The Witcher’, although not as popular as ‘Game of Thrones’ or ‘Lord of the Rings’, had a separate fan-base of its own. When ‘The Witcher’ was announced, the novel series’ writer Andrzej Sapkowski wouldn’t have imagined in his wildest dreams that the protagonist of his story, Geralt of Rivia, would ever be played by Henry Cavill! The world knows Henry as the beloved Clark Kent aka Superman from the DC cinematic universe and even though his performance in the fantasy drama ‘The Witcher’ was as good as it gets, there have been some criticisms regarding the casting of his character. That doesn’t take away the credit from the actor though the fact that he’s way too good-looking, is an issue that only the very loyal fans of the books have. Let us try to deduce whether this point is valid or should we just simply ignore it and revel in the marvel that ‘The Witcher’ is, which is all set to make a comeback in 2021.
The Polish-American series ‘The Witcher’ premiered in December 2019 and for weeks after its worldwide release on Netflix, it remained trending on the streaming platform. The series told the story of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter who is magically enhanced to become more powerful. He looks like a normal human being but has superhuman powers. His destiny is to find Ciri, a princess. There is another parallel plot of Yennefer, a sorcerer, who was formerly hunchbacked and now she is probably the hottest magician/sorcerer in the show’s entire universe. Her timeline crosses Geralt’s many times. The third key piece of the puzzle is Princess Ciri, carrier of some magical powers and whose destiny is interlinked with Geralt.
‘The Witcher’ review
The first season essentially follows the odysseys of these three magical characters as they go through battles, deceits, and monster-hunts, separately before crossing paths with each other. The series features some of the coolest VFX sequences, and not only because they are good, but because they seem like the examples of top-tier human imagination.
Talking about the storyline, the non-linear story structure runs through many timelines before it starts making sense. But it doesn’t take away from the intense thrill and suspense that we feel at every step that our main characters take. It only adds to the intrigue about the world and its characters. And when everything finally starts to come together, it feels like an accomplishment. In short, ‘The Witcher’ is a master-class in storytelling.
The cast has performed their characters wonderfully. Anya Chalotra as Yennefer played different shades of the characters like a pro, while Freya Allan brings the required innocence to her character of Ciri. However, the comic relief, Jaskier the Bard, played deliciously well by Joey Batey, steals the moments he is in from rest of the cast-members. As Geralt’s travelling companion, he keeps the human angle live, amidst all the ugliness we are made to sit through in form of morally bankrupt generals and bloodthirsty monsters.
And now, the man of the hour, Henry Cavill, the biggest name in the star-cast. He has proven himself to be a fantastic actor and he doesn’t disappoint here either. He played a mostly stoic monster hunter who shows no signs of empathy. But is he just a heartless monster, or humanity thrives within him? That constant internal battle he faces is one of the highlights of his performance!
Is Henry really too good-looking to be playing the monster hunter Geralt?
However, there have been fans of the books that believe Henry may be “too good-looking” to play Geralt of Rivia. They refer to the part of the book where it says that Geralt has a “hideous smile”, which, according to them, means that Geralt was actually pretty hideous to look at in general. To answer the fan’s queries, Henry himself had to come forward and in an interview with “Variety”, Henry said that the author was probably referring to the smile being “hideous”, a smile with the intent of scaring someone.
Now, why should we believe Henry unless the author comes forward to testify to that fact? Unless we know that the author Andrzej Sapkowski himself has green-lit Henry to play the lead in his fantasy drama! Now that the second season of ‘The Witcher’ is all set to release in 2021, we can’t even do anything about the casting.
Pity, we will have to make do with a painfully good-looking man to be Geralt of Rivia until the foreseeable future. Alas! Such a serious inconvenience we have to face! *Wink*
