Taking a break from the Cinematic World, No Way Home, director Jon Watts won’t be directing the Fantastic Four reboot.
The Fantastic Four reboot becomes the latest project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to lose its director. The Spider-Man director, Jon Watts was supposed to bring the franchise to life in the MCU, but he is certainly done with the cinematic world after No Way Home.
Marvel has a History of Swapping Directors
Doctor Strange sequel was supposed to be directed by Scott Derrickson, who directed the first movie, but the director parted ways with Marvel Studios. Though this didn’t affect the movie much, first because of the pandemic, and secondly the studio brought Sam Raimi over the wheel pretty quick.
Walking on the same path as the Multiverse of Madness is another anticipated Marvel Project, the Fantastic Four reboot. Though the reasons for the director leaving are entirely different but in the end the film will be delayed.
John Krasinski To Direct Fantastic Four
It was announced in December 2020 that Jon Watts will direct the new feature film for Marvel’s First Family, Fantastic Four! The announcement was huge news as the fans around the world were patiently waiting for the reboot.
It was expected that the director would pick up the Fantastic Four reboot after finishing Spider-Man: No Way Home. The world knows about the success of No Way Home and how it brought the theatres back to life after the pandemic era.
While we expected Watt to return with another blockbuster and bring the Fantastic Four franchise to the MCU, he was certainly looking for a break from the cinematic world. Maybe he returns for some new project with MCU in the future, but for now, it’s goodbye. And now since Multiverse of Madness revealed John Krasinski as Mr Fantastic, a fan casting Marvel Studios obliged to, seems like he’ll be directing the F4 iteration too.
Furthermore, in a 2020 interview with Comicbook.com Krasinski entertained the idea of directing a Marvel movie he said,
It’s so interesting because I’m such a huge fan of Marvel. I think they do their own… They have such a great formula. Yeah, I’d jump in there. In Kevin [Feige] I trust. That dude is not only the most talented guy, but the nicest guy. Yeah, whatever he wants, we’d discuss it.
Kevin Feige believe the director would return in the future
The director announced that it was life-changing for him to make the Spider-Man trilogy and he is hopeful that he and Marvel Cinematic Universe will work together in the future. He also mentioned that he can’t wait to see how the Fantastic Four reboot turns out.
“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again, and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”
In an interview with Deadline, Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito said that though they were looking forward to continuing work with Jon Watts on the Fantastic Four reboot, they understand the reasons why he is stepping away. They also said they are hopeful of crossing paths with Jon Watts in the future.
“Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away.”
The fate of the Fantastic Four franchise
Now, there is no official statement on the Fantastic Four reboot or who could be the new director. Marvel would certainly be on the hunt for a new director to fill in for Jon Watts but as of now, there is no news.
The good part is we can expect some development as with the Doctor Strange sequel coming soon we might get to see someone from the Fantastic Four. There are chances that, that someone would be Mister Fantastic and he would appear as a member of the Illuminati.
So, to be on the optimistic side we can expect some updates once Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases on 6th May 2022.
