Will ‘Offspring’ return for season 8, or is it long gone? That is the question that popular drama fans desperately want to be answered. Here’s all that we know!
The award-winning Australian comedy and drama series, ‘Offspring’, has been broadcast on Ten Network since 2010. ‘Offspring’ is created by Debra Oswald, John Edwards, and Imogen Banks, executively produced by Rick Maier and Rory Callaghan, and produced by Endemol Australia.

‘Offspring’ follows Nina Proudman (Asher Keddie), an obstetrician in her 30s, and her family and friends, as they struggle with the challenges and tribulations of everyday life – and we all know that there are many. The filming style of the show is unorthodox, with frequent drama narration combined with flashbacks, animation, and fantasy sequences.
Everything that is part of the life of a modern young professional woman is present: romance, career, single motherhood, complex family issues, and has been beautifully portrayed. Kat Stewart, Don Hany, Deborah Mailman, Eddie Perfect, Richard Davies, Linda Cropper, John Waters, and Matthew Le Nevez are a few among the main cast members.
Is ‘Offspring’ coming back?
In 2014, ‘Offspring’ gave us a near-perfect series finale at the end of its fifth season. After the loss of her true love Patrick, in its fifth season, giving birth to her daughter Zoe, navigating life as a single mother, and experiencing more Proudman family disasters, we were treated to our last glimpse of Nina (Asher Keddie).
Then, in 2016, ‘Offspring’ defied and actually made a comeback for season 6 against the laws of the TV gods, bringing nearly the whole cast back in its entirety and once again pushing the Proudman family drama back into overdrive.
True-blue ‘Offspring’ fans began to feel a little off their way through their heads as the sixth and seventh seasons of the drama never felt quite correct. All the pieces were there, but the magic was gone.
And longtime Proudman devotees began to wonder whether it was even worth the anguish they felt now to have Nina & co. back in their lives.
“We’d already had the perfect ending play out, and now that lovely closure had unravelled completely.”
‘Offspring’ Season 8 may not see the light of the day
‘Offspring’ is the best of all the current Aussie TV dramas. Don’t even try to argue. It’s got family warm-and-fuzzies, realistic relationships, and motherhood portrayals, weird musical sequences that come out of nowhere, and Nina Proudman’s absolutely adorable batshit lead.
Scary rumours circulated last year that ‘Offspring’ might not return – like, not even a warning of the final season, not a continuation of the 2017 season.
Keddie, who plays the loveable Nina Proudman in the show, told the “Herald Sun” that since season 7 wrapped last year, there has been no conversation about continuing the series.
“The truth is I haven’t had a single conversation about it (continuing ’Offspring’) since we finished shooting back in May/June last year”
The 43-year-old opened up about the future of ‘Offspring’ after the finale of season 7. She and Channel Ten confirmed that it was still undecided whether fans would be delighted to have a season 8.
“I’m happy for the show to come to a natural close but I still feel seven series in that it is challenging and that the writing has really taken a big leap this year”
She said.
“There are different possibilities if we were to go again but I also feel like all the sibling, in particular, have gotten to quite a solid place in their emotional lives. It is quite satisfying at the end. There is a lovely note of ambiguity”
she added.
If you were missing Nina Proudman’s shenanigans and needed a reason to binge-watch, now is the time for ‘Offspring’ on Netflix.
