Emily De Margheriti is a pioneering Australian actress, producer, and role model for women in the entertainment industry. In the horror comedy Sissy, Emily De Margheriti plays the lead role of Alex. The film examines the dark side of social media and its consequences on friendships and mental health…
She acts, dances, produces, and writes. She co-founded Dems Entertainment and worked on films including I Hate Kids and To Hell with Reno. Sissy, her latest film, is a spoof of influencer culture. Emily De Margheriti began making movies in school, but not in the format teachers wanted. A short science experiment? She chose a prac report above hypothesis, findings, and conclusions. Her recent film, Sissy, portrays a grown-up bully. Cecilia (Alicia Dee) and Emma (Hannah Barlow) reconcile after a decade. Cecilia attends Emma’s bachelorette weekend and is stuck in a remote lodge with her high school bully. “In exploring what it meant to be Alex, I drew on people that I know in my life that make their friends their family, because Alex is very, very loyal and she will do anything to increase her popularity, but also she’ll do anything for friends” — says De Margheriti.
“I admire her boundaries, and I think we’re all damaged and reacting at some point.”

In an exclusive conversation with DKODING, Emily De Margheriti discussed her path to becoming a filmmaker, the sources of inspiration for her films, and the vital lessons she’s learned from working on both sides of the camera:

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us! Do you remember a particular moment that you knew acting was your path to pursue?
Acting is in my blood! I can remember chatting with my grandad as a teenager, and telling him that I wanted to be an actor, and to my surprise he tried to persuade me otherwise! My grandad had a father who was an actor, Wally Thomas (Monty Python – The meaning of Life, The Singing Detective) and my grandad as a young teenager was always a last-minute stand-in when an actor wasn’t able to go on, or he had to deal with his father staying “in character” around the house. Grandad hated the stress of having to learn lines at the last minute and being forced to get on stage. My grandad joined the army to get away from all the acting madness. I guess having your dad as “King Lear” walking around the house for weeks on end wasn’t so great! Hearing about the chaos that acting can be, firsthand from my grandad had the opposite effect than intended – it sounded fun! I chose to ignore his advice and I become an actor, nothing like a “whatever you do, don’t”, to inspire me to do it!

Sissy is labeled a horror-comedy. How was that experience filming this kind of work as opposed to your previous projects?
Sissy is unlike anything I’ve filmed so far. I must admit I loved being on a horror set, slightly terrifying and exciting at the same time, the night shoots added to that eeriness. Getting buried alive – literally, was challenging, and as a night person, I loved filming at 4am. Playing Alex in Sissy felt very different from other characters I’ve played, as this role was more challenging. My other projects (Ladies in Black and I hate Kids) were very much the comic relief.

What would you consider the most influential theme in Sissy?
A theme that stands out the most for me in Sissy, is the way the movie portrays social media, the power of today’s social media and the affects it can cause in individuals lives.

In what ways do you relate to your character, Alex?
I relate to her boldness. She has strong boundaries, which I admire. I can also relate to her loyalty; I’ve always loved my friends and would do absolutely anything for them. I love that Alex is true to herself and even though you might not like her, you come to appreciate her point of view by the time you see the ending of Sissy.

What, if anything, did you take away from filming Sissy that you will bring with you to your next project?
I have made friends that will last a lifetime and have enriched my perspective on film production. I always approach a role in a professional manner and am inspired to continue to love what I do. My biggest take away is that you can’t prepare for everything that’s going to happen on set and you must be prepared to trust your work and be adaptable in the moment.

What’s next for you and your busy traveling schedule!
I am heading to Sitges in Spain to go to Sitges: International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia and help promote Sissy as well as see some other fantastic independent movies. After that I’ve got to head back to Australia as Sissy will premier at Dendy’s Cinema in Sydney on the 28th October. Fortunately its now also available on Shudder.com!
