Why Henry Cavill’s Superman redemption arc is most pertinent for Justice League
While the whole Justice League was effectively butchered by Joss Whedon and WB executives Superman suffered the most. Back in 2013, Snyder chose to kick start DCEU with Man of Steel and Henry Cavill was set in the titular role. To present the universal beacon of hope in dark aesthetics is no easy feat and only Snyder could manage it and Henry perform. But come 2016’s Batman Vs Superman: The Dawn of Justice he was killed off with hints to be resurrected in Justice League. Fans love Cavill so much in the character that WB can hear demands of Man of Steel sequel still. Cavill returns in the red cape and boots in March 2021. Here’s how Superman’s arch will unfold.
Henry Cavill’s Superman Stint
Cavill was introduced in the WB’s reboot of Superman, Man of Steel and fans took an instant liking. It’s hard to imagine anyone else as Kal-El but him. And Henry has made it clear on occasions that he hasn’t hung the boots yet. But conspicuously, there are no Superman projects in sight even when DC is opening up an entire Multiverse.
Not only Cavill’s MoS became the stepping stone of Snyder’s envisioned DCEU but he was also present at the watchparty when latter announced the Snyder Cut last year. While Cavill never lost hope much like Superman he was wronged in the Justice League theatrical cut.
To start with JL was supposed to build on Supes’ character arch from MoS and BvS. However, most of it was left on the cutting floor. He was also the actor who did most of the work in Whedon’s reshoots. That brings us to the ‘mustachegate’!
Watch: How Henry Cavill Got In Shape To Play Superman
Cavill was in middle of shooting Mission Impossible: Fallout when JL reshoots took place. Since he was contractually obliged to keep the mustache it had to be removed digitally during the post-production resulting in his awkward lip and jaw line in the final movie. As Snyder won’t use any of Whedon’s shots we can be sure Cavill’s perfect face will greet us on HBO Max.
Furthermore, Snyder already showed fans a clip of much debated Superman’s ‘black suit.’ Which confirms justice will be done to Kal-El’s character arch finally! The black suit is a symbol of death and resurrection of Superman – broadly this tells us that Kal would have to earn his Blue-Red suit again by the end of Justice League. This indeed brings back everything that Snyder had in store for fans both cinematically and philosophically.
Superman’s DCEU Future
We know an array of Batmen is coming to DC. Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Robert Pattinson all will play their own version of the Caped Crusader. Gal Gadot is set to reprise Wonder Woman for the threequel announced right after WW84 release.
Ezra Miller will do a standalone Flash movie in 2022 that will open doors to DC Multiverse. The future of Ray Fisher’s Cyborg – who is at the heart of Snyder Cut – is still in limbo due to the ongoing controversy between WB and the actor. However, the words mum on Cavill’s return.
Cavill is the most sought out actor in the industry right now with iconic characters like The Witcher, Sherlock Holmes [Enola Holmes] and a part in MI franchise. It would be foolish of WB to not utilize him for the part. It’s really like leaving your money on the table. With fans already demanding a MoS 2 a consumer base is already set for the studio to capitalize on.
However, there are no indications of a possible revival yet. Trades have recently reported WB is not looking to include Cavill in a movie that ties into the character. But they do that all the time! Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam and Zachary Levi’s Shazam are possible projects Cavill can take up.
No matter what or how Cavill’s Superman certainly has a DCEU future that heavily depends upon the success of the Snyder Cut.
