Wonder Woman 1984 did more harm than good to Warner Bros, now back in Snyder’s Justice League can Diana find her solace
Gal Gadot’s Christmas release is a polarizing mystery! On one hand, the subscription numbers of HBO Max and stream time says it’s a hit. On the other hand, fans and critics are stunned at the movie’s plot holes and loose ends. While the media couldn’t get enough of reporting the ‘Rotten’ rating of the movie WB didn’t wait any longer to announce the threequel. But one thing is for sure, Wonder Woman 1984 is one of the weakest entries in DC catalogue. Thor was once there too and now there is a fourth instalment in making thanks to Taika Waititi-Kevin Feige-Chris Hemsworth trio. So, we can hope to say, ‘never say never’ and wish Snyder would be able to show Diana in a certain light that Patty Jenkins missed.
Diana Prince’s DCEU Journey
Wonder Woman 2017 was the only saving grace of WB that year. The massive success of Diana’s first adventure was followed by epic failure of Justice League’s theatrical cut. Gal Gadot was handpicked by Zack Snyder, who served as the executive producer on the feature. Also, he was steering his DCEU plans that time and was more invested in the central characters. For the holy DC trinity, he had Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent and Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.
The first Wonder Woman is a testament to what Gadot can do with the character. She had the right poise and strength and Jenkins had the right pressure and guidance. The movie made $821 million on the worldwide box-office and Diana/Gadot became every little girl’s inspiration at the moment. Wonder Woman also made way to a female lead big-budget superhero movie. Marvel soon followed with Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in 2019 and ironically enough their second female lead Black Widow will now follow WW84’s fan verdict.
So how can Wonder Woman 1984 fail fans so badly?
What’s Wrong With Wonder Woman 1984?
While no one sets out to piss fans off especially DC! There were some fundamental flaws in the movie. After Justice League’s failure WB sort of focused on individual franchisees rather than a big crossover event. Resulting in Aquaman, Shazam, Birds of Prey – which all share a common DNA but storylines never intercept. Now with finally Director’s cut of Justice League coming out right after Wonder Woman 1984, some damage control is needed.
What fans speculate the movie missed Zack’s overall direction. In the first movie Jenkins collaborated with Snyder to match the character arch but with now mismatched timeline and chronology – certain plot points contradict the story. Like, one can wonder why Diana was fighting on ground during Justice League while we saw her fly in 1984.
Apart from that the story choices are also least to say awkward! Steve Trevor’s return was baffling. Getting his consciousness into a random man’s body turned off many fans, the ‘morning after’ scene made fans point fingers.
Furthermore, the missing climactic battle with the antagonist was sorely missed by the fans. Jenkins’ admitted to the fact that WB made her do a final battle sequence in Wonder Woman [remember, right pressure?]. However, this time around it was her decision to exclude it.
Nonetheless, the one fight we get between the apex predator, Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah and Wonder Woman also fails to generate much excitement. The battle is almost hard to see due to bad CGI and deceiving darkness [mistake previously done by makers of HBO’s Game of Thrones]. Over all, Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord and Wiig’s Cheetah were underutilized. The actors no matter left a good impression on the audience.

Can Snyder Redeem Wonder Woman?
There is no easy answer to that question. But following a character, only months apart in slightly different vision is going to be hard for fans. There’s no doubt Snyder’s version of Diana is going to quench the thirst of fans who wanted to see her in action but for most it’s going to be a dissonance.
In Wonder Woman 1984, Jenkins has left Diana on sort of open grounds so whenever the story picks up in chronology i.e., 2017 when we look at JL in DC’s order – Diana can be more or less the hardened warrior whom we are yet to see. Snyder Cut with additional photography will certainly bring in new facets to Wonder Woman’s character.
