Ben Affleck has agreed to return to DC as the Batman starting with Snyder Cut but will he stay on after 2022 Flash
It’s a good time to be a DC fan and even better to be a Batman’s. During 2020, WB has been facelifting its superhero world and Batman is at the centre of it. All hell broke loose when the Snyder Cut was announced last year. Especially for Ben Affleck’s Batman fans, it was a redemption they had long prayed for. Affleck not only donned the cape and cowl for additional photography of the Justice League he also signed up for The Flash 2022 starring Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton. Yes, Keaton too will don the cape and cowl for the Flashpoint event. Furthermore, Robert Pattinson is set to debut as Vengeance the same year in a movie that was once Affleck’s to write and act.
Here’s how we reach up to this point with so many Batman in sight and the origin of this all goes back to Affleck’s Caped Crusader or Batfleck.
Ben Affleck’s Batman Journey
Affleck was cast as Batman in 2013 for a Superman sequel. When Snyder first made Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice at 2015 Comic-con the crowd went mad! Though Man of Steel as criticized for its darker, less hopeful approach to Superman, BvS really ‘up the ante’ for the genre and industry. Notably, director Joe Russo admitted that Marvel President Kevin Feige green lit the Captain America: Civil War after DC’s Batman Vs Superman announcement.
Both BvS and Civil War released really closely in 2016 and it’s a different tale how they fared and responded to when compared. Nonetheless, DC’s MoS sequel earned $873.6 million on the worldwide box-office which left many wondering if it’s really a success.
Furthermore, Batfleck got a mixed review. While his performance polarized fans and critics he went on to do cameo in Suicide Squad and leading the Justice League in 2017. The failure of theatrical cut was his last straw, soon after he exited the franchise. Talking about the kind of hype superhero movies get he told USA Today in 2017 interview, “I understand and embrace that (hype). That’s part of the pressure that comes with doing it. That’s why I am not going to do it, unless I really feel confident about it.”
Affleck’s Standalone Batman movie
Affleck’s exit also tumbled WB’s idea of rebooting Batman with the actor. He was set to act and direct in a standalone movie but his personal issues topped with his battle with alcoholism and failure of JL – all added up to his decision to exit. He told Late Night show host Jimmy Kimmel, “I tried to direct a version of it and worked with a really good screenwriter, but just couldn’t come up with a version, I couldn’t crack it.” He further added, “So I thought it was time to let someone else take a shot at it.”

And that’s when WB decided to bring in Cloverfield director Matt Reeves to helm the project who unusually chose Twilight fame actor Robert Pattinson to play the titular role. DC Fandome event trailer shows Pattinson is Vengeance and fans can’t get enough of him!
Return of Batfleck
But Batfleck returns! The announcement of Ben Affleck signing up for Andy Muschietti and Ezra Miller’s The Flash 2022 took fandom by storm. He took the opportunity and made history by becoming first actor to play Batman a fourth time. A fifth appearance for Flash 2022 if one counts Snyder Cut as a separate appearance.
Fans of Batfleck are ecstatic at the news and certainly they’ll see justice done to the caped crusader in Snyder’s cut. Whedon had butchered most of Batman’s arch and replaced it with funny puns (?!) that didn’t sit well with the audience. More so, Muschietti plans to bring the emotional arch of Batman to forefront in his feature and that’s something fans would love to relish.
Maybe The Flash will bid farewell to Batfleck from DC or maybe not!
