Since Fox and Disney’s eventual merger a few years ago, many MCU fans have been waiting to see what Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios do with the new slew of superhero fan-favourite characters that they now own. The most noteworthy characters are X-Men and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.
Although Marvel Studios – and particularly President Kevin Feige – have made no secret of their intention to include Deadpool into the larger MCU, the character dynamics around Wade Wilson’s fourth-wall-breaking “Merc with a Mouth” make it tough to fit the character into just any storyline. The first and most pressing question that surfaced following the Disney-Fox merger in 2019 was, “How can you feature an R-rated character in a film for a studio known for kid-focused content?“
Even though director David Leitch initially stated that the character’s R-rating would not be a problem following the merger, reports from Grace Randolph about a plan to create a PG-13 Deadpool 3 and rumours of creative conflicts over what a Disney Deadpool movie should look like seem to suggest otherwise.

Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, has assured fans that Deadpool will appear at some point in the MCU. Furthermore, hinting that the character’s storyline in the third film will take a completely different turn. But, aside from Variety’s report that Deadpool 1 and 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been recalled to work on the script for the third chapter, there hasn’t been much buzz about any Deadpool plans until recently.
Hulk To Join Deadpool
Shawn Levy, the director of Free Guy and a close friend of Ryan Reynolds, recently teased a very unexpected crossover on Twitter by posting an image of Mark Ruffalo and Ryan Reynolds on the set of The Adam Project, plus stickers of their superhero alter characters.
While the post may not have anything to do with a third Deadpool film, bringing Wade Wilson’s character into the MCU via Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk isn’t a bad idea.
Ruffalo’s character and Hulk alter ego; Bruce Banner, hasn’t had much to do post-Blip, and while another standalone Hulk movie isn’t in the works, Bruce is still very important to the MCU’s scientific sphere.
Deadpool 3 Possible Story Arc
The MCU’s fragmenting universe provides Marvel Studios with the ideal trump card for exploring multiple comic-accurate narratives and connections. After the buzz surrounding, Andrew Garfield’s performance in No Way Home began to circulate, there were suspicions that the studio might bring him back for Spiderman 4. If they use the same multiverse principles, they might be able to introduce Deadpool while keeping his fourth-wall-breaking skills – however, there’s still the issue of the character being R-rated.
If Marvel chose to look for comic book links, the closest one would be when Hulk and Deadpool met in a comic book issue titled Deadpool/Amazing Spider-Man/Hulk: Identity Wars, which was released in August 2011. Because the comic book issue dealt with a plot involving alternate reality travel, it may be a solid starting point for a Deadpool MCU crossover.
However, with Marvel’s next few phases all set and Ryan Reynolds currently taking a “sabbatical” from acting, we’ll have to wait a little longer for any real plot details for Deadpool 3.
Deadpool’s MCU Future
With the Multiverse of Madness destined to determine everything in the MCU in the future, Deadpool’s fourth-wall-breaking abilities might be incredibly useful in an ever-expanding Marvel universe. Aside from a large roster of prospective heroes and villains for the MCU, Marvel Studios must also figure out what to do with the newly inherited characters from the Disney-Fox merger.
In accordance with this, there have been recent speculations that Marvel is working on a Deadpool vs. X-Men film for the MCU. And, because screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are supposedly working on the project together, we might expect a Deadpool/X-Men mash-up.
