‘The Sopranos’: Tony Soprano’s exigent mafia life
The series revolves around Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), a New Jersey-based Italian-American mobster, as he tries to maintain a balance between his work heading the organized crime unit, the Soprano family, and responsibilities as a patriarch in his personal life. Tony is often seen suffering from panic attacks and takes therapy with psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) throughout the series to deal with the same. Tony finds opposition in his uncle, Corrado John “Junior” Soprano Jr. (Dominic Chianese) and wife Carmela (Edie Falco), and is challenged by another group of mobsters, the New York City-based Lupertazzi family.

The series is considered to be one of the most influential shows ever made. Everything about the show from its scriptwriting to its cinematography to its acting performances is beyond remarkable and have stayed with the audience over the years. This year, ‘The Sopranos’ became one of the most streamed shows in several countries. The show has, over the years, also gained attention for its unique soundtrack and has even churned out a game as an ode to its popularity and success.
On April 6, 2020, actors Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa began hosting a podcast called ‘Talking Sopranos’ where the two provide inside information about each episode of ‘The Sopranos’. It became a huge hit and reached 5 million views within five months.
‘The Many Saints of Newark’: The much-awaited prequel
Directed by Alan Taylor and written by David Chase and Lawrence Konner, ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ is an upcoming crime drama movie that will serve as a prequel to ‘The Sopranos’. It will be set in the ‘60s and ‘70s in Newark, New Jersey, with a backcloth of 1967 riots that acted as a source of tension between the Italian-American and African-American communities. The movie will also show how living with his parents Johnny and Livia shaped Tony’s childhood and led him into the world of crime.
The movie will star Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Leslie Odom Jr., Michael Gandolfini, Corey Stoll, John Magaro, Billy Magnussen, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, and Michela De Rossi in pivotal roles.
Actor Michael Gandolfini, who is, in real life, the son of James Gandolfini, will portray his late father’s character, Tony. While talking about how difficult it was for him to get in the skin of the character he said,
“The funny thing is, before the audition, I had never watched a minute of ‘The Sopranos’. I was just a kid when he was making it. I would go to the set and ask him what it was about, and he’d say, ‘Oh, it’s about this guy who’s in the mob and kind of goes to therapy.’ The hardest part of this whole process was watching the show for the first time … It was an intense process. Because as an actor, I had to watch this guy who created the role, to look for mannerisms, voice, all those things I would have to echo. But then I’d also be seeing my father. I think what made it so hard was I had to do it alone …”
Release date of the movie reboot confirmed
The movie was earlier supposed to release in September 2020, but due to COVID-19, the release has been pushed to March 12th, 2021. The movie will also simultaneously release on the streaming platform, HBO Max. So, just a few months more and we will finally get to view the highly anticipated movie reboot!
