BBC One has renewed its popular fantasy drama ‘His Dark Materials’ for season 3 but unfortunately, this will be the final season of the show.
Based on a novel series of the same name, written by Philip Pullman, ‘His Dark Materials‘ is a 2019 British fantasy-adventure drama series developed for BBC One and HBO. The series gained prominence for its star-studded cast, extraordinary VFX, and set design. All these only complimented the show’s impeccable story and note-worthy scriptwriting. Exploring genres of fantasy and mystery, the series has doled out two exceptionally made seasons and has found a loyal fanbase.
With the idea of adapting the complete trilogy of books, on December 22nd, 2020, the executives at HBO and BBC One decided to renew the show for one last season, ahead of the season 2 finale.

‘His Dark Materials’: A mystery filled adventure in a multi-world reality
‘His Dark Materials’ begins in an alternative world where humans live with their animal companions that are called daemons and are manifestations of the human soul. The show revolves around a girl named Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen). She was raised at Jordan College with other scholars. Things start becoming complicated when Lyra uncovers a secret involving Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), her parents.
As her friend goes missing, Lyra starts her search for her and, in the process, discovers a series of kidnappings linked to a mysterious substance called “Dust”. This takes her on a journey exploring other worlds that she didn’t previously know about. All this also leads her to meet Will Parry (Amir Wilson), a teenager whose father went missing years ago.
Season 1 is based on the first book in the trilogy titled “Northern Lights” (1995) while the second season is based on book two that is called “The Subtle Knife” (1997). The show features award-winning visual effects and character animation and has won critical acclaim for its screenplay and cinematography. Also starring popular actors like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Andrew Scott, Simone Kirby, Ruta Gedmintas, Gary Lewis, and Lewis MacDougall, the show has found widespread success in the United Kingdom.
Renewed one last time for season 3
The executive vice president of HBO programming, Francesca Orsi, revealed in a statement, “Bringing Phillip Pullman’s epic, intricate, and culturally resonant body of work to television has been a tremendous privilege. We thank our incredible partners at the BBC and the entire Bad Wolf team, led by the indefatigable Jane Tranter, for their exceptional work on the first two seasons. We look forward to completing the trilogy with this final chapter in Lyra’s journey”.
Executive producer Jane Tranter expressed her happiness over the renewal saying that the show has been a career highlight for her. She said,
“None of this would have been possible without the wonderful commitment and conviction of BBC and HBO. I am excited, thrilled, and honoured to be making the third part of Philip Pullman’s trilogy with their support and encouragement”.
Season 3: What will we get to see?
Season 3 of ‘His Dark Materials’ will be based on the third and final book in the trilogy titled “The Amber Spyglass”. It was renewed on December 22nd, 2020 for season 3 with 8 episodes, and is set to go into production in early 2021. The bad news is that this will be the last season and will mark the end of the show. The upcoming season will see the rebellion against the authority turn into a full-blown war and Asriel trying to get his hands on the “Subtle Knife”, that is currently in Will’s possession, to construct a new Republic of Heaven. Mrs Coulter has captured Lyra and will stop at nothing to prevent her from becoming the next Eve.
Season 3 is also most likely to take us to new worlds including the Land of the Dead as well as the world of mulefa, and even tell us more about the angels/watchers. It is yet to be seen whether the television series will end exactly the way the book ended or not. We do hope to see a happy ending here.
