DC Universe streaming service has decided to hand the reigns of its popular superhero series ‘Doom Patrol’ to HBO Max.
One of the most popular shows of 2020 includes DC Universe’s superhero action original series ‘Doom Patrol’. Based on a superhero team from the DC Comics, the show was developed by Jeremy Carver for the DC Universe streaming service. The first season premiered in 2019 and the second season was streamed this year on both DC Universe as well as HBO Max. Since its release, the show has not only been showered with praises by the critics but has also created a loyal fanbase for itself. The series is a Warner Bros. Television production and since HBO Max is its flagship streaming platform, season 3 of ‘Doom Patrol’ will be premiering solely on Max.

‘Doom Patrol’: The most absurd superheroes in town!
The story revolves around ‘Doom Patrol’, a superhero team, the members of which have attained their supernatural powers through tragedies and have become social outcasts. Most of the team’s members are treated by Niles Caulder/The Chief (Timothy Dalton), who also gives them all a place to stay in his mansion. The team consists of Jane (Diane Guerrero), the dominant identity of Kay Challis who developed 64 distinct identities due to childhood trauma and gained powers for each identity as a result of an experiment, Rita Farr (April Bowlby), a former Hollywood actress, Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer), A former Air Force pilot who was disfigured in a plane crash and is covered in bandages all over to prevent the emission of radioactive rays, Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser), a cyborg and former NASCAR driver, and Victor “Vic” Stone/Cyborg (Joivan Wade), who received enhancements from his father after meeting with an accident.
The star-studded cast of the series attracted attention right off the bat and made the series one of the most anticipated ones shortly before its release. ‘Doom Patrol’ has been consistently praised for its stellar scriptwriting and visual effects. It was renewed for a third season this year that will be solely aired on HBO Max.
Why is HBO Max ‘Doom Patrol’s’ new home?
Despite being a DC Universe original, the show has found a new home in HBO Max for season 3. One of the main reasons that have been cited for this is the huge budget of the show. Kevin Reilly, the content chief of HBO Max, was quoted in an interview saying,
“DC is such a valuable entity to us, and the depth of fandom is so important. So, we really want to figure out how we walk this line for fans where we have a deep fan engagement, which is why DCU was designed, and a broader fan engagement. That is evolving but there were high-end series that DCU produced that felt like, budgetarily, we could handle from a business model better, and bring along and service that swath of fans. ‘Doom Patrol’ was a show we identified that had deep love for it and tucked right into our portfolio”.
Executives have also confessed that having the show on HBO Max will guarantee a larger audience and will help the show reach bigger numbers in terms of viewership. They have said that they value the DC Universe fandom and are looking forward to catering to them.
‘Doom Patrol’ Season 3: What can we expect?
Earning a well-deserved place in The Verge’s list of the best shows of 2020, season 3 of ‘Doom Patrol’ is being greatly anticipated by its fans. Since Mr. Nobody was still alive at the end of season 2, it is being said that he might return in season 3. Jane’s fate in the Underground is also ambiguous and uncertain, and it is yet to be revealed whether Niles is really dead. A number of storylines were left unsettled at the end of season 2 so the foundation for season 3 is already laid. Only time will tell what else the makers are planning to do in season 3. Till then go check out this amazing show if you still have not!
