Complex, psychedelic, and miles ahead of your regular superhero fiction, ‘Legion’ is genuinely a treat for all its die-hard fans. But, what made the makers come up with ‘Legion’ Season 3 despite the plummeting ratings? Beating all odds, will there be a ‘Legion’ Season 4? Read on to find out more.
Created by Noah Hawley for FOX, the American cable television series ‘Legion’ follows the life of David Haller (played by Dan Stevens) as he tries to take control over his mutant powers while fighting a government task force designed to capture and kill all mutants. Adding to his struggles, Haller, a Marvel Comics character, was diagnosed with schizophrenia at a very young age.

‘Legion’ Season 3: A suitable conclusion
Noah Hawley’s ‘Legion’ is a visual masterpiece. Using short stories to paint the bigger picture, Hawley excels in delivering absolutely grand season premieres and finales. What’s in between is often messy but is made spectacular with direction, editing, and lofty production design. ‘Legion’ Season 3 is no different.
Season 3 opens with a bang and ends with the same vigour – breaking away from the ongoing story arc. Haller is the bad guy. As a hippie cult leader, he is still delusional about his deeds and his descent into the rabbit hole of madness and darkness. He still believes he is doing the right thing, forcing people to see things his way, using his telekinetic and telepathic powers to manipulate minds. We also see him lurking in the shadows, mourning, and raging against the loss of his beloved Syd (played by Rachel Keller) while hiding from The Forces of Division.
‘Legion’ Season 3 no longer tries to make the viewers sympathize with David Haller’s plight. His state of mind is absolutely clear, without any ambiguity whatsoever. Not shifting the focus off the fact that Haller raped Syd at the end of season 2, ‘Legion’ Season 3 devotes time to the other women characters like Kerry (played by Amber Midthunder) and Switch (played by Lauren Tsai).
If you look closely, the story of ‘Legion’ spanning across the three seasons is like a three-act structure of a film in itself – the first act or season 1 introducing all the mutants in ‘Legion’, the second act or season 2 heavily driven by action, building up to the crescendo and the third act or season 3 finally leading to the much-anticipated catharsis, tying up all loose ends. In fact, ‘Legion’ Season 3 finale blesses the show’s fans with a uniquely circular narrative, one that can be revisited again and again. The finale title cards read: “This is the end. Then, the beginning. Then, the end. What it all means is not for us to know. It is for history to decide.”
‘Legion’ Season 4: Will FOX bring it back?
‘Legion’ Season 3 premiered on 24 June 2019 and concluded on 12 August 2019 giving all the mutants in ‘Legion’ a satisfactory ending. Being miles ahead of any superhero series, the show has a very niche, yet strong fan base. So when rumours of ‘Legion’ Season 3 being the series finale started doing rounds, many were utterly disappointed.
If the film-like structure of the series is taken into consideration, then the ‘Legion’ Season 3 finale naturally marks the end of the narrative. Hawley had all the three seasons planned and visualised beforehand and ‘Legion’ Season 4 was never a part of his vision: “I think endings are what gives stories meaning. I always thought of this as a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end. It felt like it had three acts so this was a natural place to end it”, said Hawley. Talking about his final goodbye to the show, Hawley told “Indiewire”,
“I loved that I was able to get my hands on it at the end, and say goodbye to it physically as opposed to just having written it”.
Disney’s acquisition of 20th century Fox also has a lot to do with the future of ‘Legion’. FX’s mutant telly shows, like ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ (which wasn’t marketed well) and ‘The New Mutants’ (which experienced a delayed-release), speak volumes about Disney’s plan-of-action with the forthcoming mutant shows. The chances of FX’s wacky and weird shows co-existing parallelly with Disney’s upcoming mutant incarnations are slim to nil. Having said that, the significant drop in ratings after ‘Legion’ Season 2 premiered also weakened the chances of survival for the show.
Cast, plot, release date of season 4
FX allowed full liberty to Hawley to create absolute magic on screen. Season 1 was grand and eye-catching, opening with 1.6 million viewers. Season 2 was all about going wild with elaborate and spectacular sets, essentially to make up for the lack of a gripping story. That is when the viewership and ratings started to plummet. So much so, that by the end of the ‘Legion’ Season 3 finale, the viewership had dropped to a mere 288,000.
Being an expensive production in itself, the numbers clearly did not justify the making of ‘Legion’ Season 4 in 2020 or in the years to come. The fact that Hawley was given the green flag by FX for ‘Legion’ Season 3, despite the drastic fall in ratings and viewership, was quite a shocker in itself. Sadly, the ‘Legion’ Season 3 official trailer also had the line “the final chapter begins” written. So the true chances of releasing ‘Legion’ Season 4 in 2020 or anytime soon are almost none. Thus, no information about the cast, plot, or release date has been confirmed by FX or Disney so far.
Will Noah Hawley’s ‘Legion’ ride the revival tide and aim for season 4? Tell us what you think in the comments below!
