Lynda Carter‘s cameo in WW 1984 is the first glimpse of the original Wonder Woman in the DC Multiverse.
No matter how hard you’ve been trying to avoid a Wonder Woman 1984 spoiler, you must know that Lynda Carter has a cameo as Asteria in the end-credit scene. Whilst the glimpse of the first-ever Wonder Woman was enough to entice fans, Carter’s presence in the movie will have a lasting effect on the entire DC Universe. Carter’s Wonder Women show recently debuted on HBO Max before the Christmas release of WW 84 on HBO Max and in US theatres.
Earlier this year, WB was able to successfully launch a DC slate that pleased fans for the first time. The shift in DC’s attitude is brought about by the restructuring of its parent company WarnerMedia. Furthermore, WB announced DC Multiverse by canonizing all the characters that were and will be in its universe. Meaning, all the characters are part of the same universe existing on different Earths. Carter’s presence in Wonder Woman 1984 is the beginning of that Multiverse.
Wonder Woman 1984 End Credit Scene
The Wonder Woman end credit scene comes with the HBO Max release. Perhaps the most satisfying scene in the movie, Lynda Carter saves a young woman and her child from a crushing pole. She explains that its just a matter of practice and she has had a lot – hinting at the long looming presence of the Amazonian warrior in the DC universe. Carter identifies herself as Asteria with a classic wink to the camera the moment it cuts off.

The first thing to be appreciated is how impeccably 80’s the entire end credit scene looks like. Lynda Carter played the first live-action Wonder Woman in 1975. Although the TV show ran for just three seasons, Carter became the face of character for generations. In return, she also became the icon of feminism, hope, beauty and kindness – everything that Wonder Woman stands for!
Carter shares many similarities with Gadot. She was crowned Miss World in 1972 viz Gadot participated in Miss Universe 2004 as Miss Israel. Carter was the perfect embodiment of the Wonder Woman spirit in the ’70s. Her red corset, blue tights, bracelets and lasso inspired millions of cosplay around the world, finding its place in numerous pop culture references.
DC’s Wonder Woman appearing in All Star no. 8 was created by psychologist William Moulton Marston (under the pseudonym Charles Moulton) and artist Harry G. Peter. She is easily DC’s most easily recognizable icon completing the DC’s trinity standing alongside Batman and Superman. In her power levels she stands next only to Superman having near mortality, super sharp reflexes and also as we see in WW84 powers of her father Zeus.
Who is Asteria?
Wonder Woman 1984’s end-credit scene is a small nod to the character in the new DC Multiverse coupled with the seeds of a potential return of Lynda Carter for the threequel. Director Patty Jenkins describes the moment as a ‘button’ either with a possible future or left as fan service.
In the DC comic mythology, Asteria is an Amazonian warrior who stayed back to hold the attacking waves of men when Zeus was creating Themyscira. She held the men while her sisters in arms could flee to safety. After Diana left the island, she sought out Asteria but could only find her Golden Armour, which eventually ended up in her secret room in Washington DC.
This plot point has been used in Wonder Woman 1984 as Diana (Gal Gadot) explains the backstory to Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). The Golden Armour that Gadot wears in the movie belongs to Asteria. The armour and the end-credit scene explain Carter’s presence in the DC multiverse as the legendary Amazonian warrior who is watching over humanity since ages.
What does Lynda Carter’s Presence in WW 1984 mean?
Carter’s presence as Asteria only cements DC’s Multiverse hold. While the return of Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as Batmans had been a highlight of the year gone by, Carter’s cameo has upped the ante for fans.
If the explanation of how DC Multiverse functions at the FanDome event is anything to go by, then things would look like a magnified version of CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event in DC’s future. Ezra Miller’s cameo in Grant Gustin’s The Flash series has opened up endless possibilities. With different Batman coming to DC, it won’t be a farfetched idea to see Carter and Gadot rubbing shoulders in Wonder Woman threequel.
Whilst there’s a lot of buzz around Wonder Woman 3 in the fandom now that we have seen the movie, Gal Gadot has revealed that the plans are on hold right now. She told Variety, “We have no idea. You never know. I would love to do another one if the story is great and with Patty of course. But I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see.”
On the other hand, Jenkins has made it clear that she’d only direct the third movie if it debuts in theatres. Meanwhile, it was announced at Disney’s Investor Day that Jenkins will be helming Star Wars for the studio which is going to keep her busy for a while. Gadot and Jenkins will team up next for Cleopatra, which was announced earlier this year.
