‘Fantastic Four’ part of the Marvel Phase 4
At the end of Disney’ Investor Day, Feige shared a piece of great news that left fans overjoyed. He said:
“I’m happy to announce a film about one of the truly iconic Marvel families – in fact, Marvel’s first family: the ‘Fantastic Four’. We’re working on a feature now and it will be directed by the director of our recent Spider-Man films, Jon Watts.”
The ‘Fantastic Four’ have remained an integral part of Marvel Comics since 1961 with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm have been some of Marvel’s most beloved characters on-screen. Before Marvel’s Phase 4, the ‘Fantastic Four‘ have appeared three times on the big screen. The first appeared in the 2005 film and then in its 2007 sequel, ‘Rise of the Silver Surfer’. They also appeared in Josh Trank’s 2015 reboot which, unfortunately, was not received well by fans and critics. But since the time Disney purchased Fox, fans had been guessing for Disney to reboot the iconic character once again as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

How will the ‘Fantastic Four’ connect to the ‘Avengers’?
Ever since Kevin Feige announced his plans for ‘Fantastic Four’, fans have been figuring out how they will be connected to both ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. In the comics, Reed Richards decided to test his experimental rocket with his girlfriend Sue Storm, Johnny, and Ben Grimm. Jumping from the MCU comics to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, the ‘Fantastic Four’ are testing the rocket around the same time Thanos is attacking Wakanda. While experimenting in space, the ‘Fantastic Four’ were snapped out of existence just like everyone. When they return to existence, they get exposed to the cosmic energy rays that give them their powers. Hence, turning them into Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Thing, and the Human Torch.
While iconic superheroes like Thor, Doctor Strange will get their sequels, other characters such as Loki, Black Widow, and Hawkeye are also ready to enjoy their solo projects. While the MCU Phase 4 is ready to dig deeper, some unexplored superheroes of the first marvel family (Fantastic Four) are all set to join the madness.
The Tony Stark connection
In ‘Captain America: Civil War’, Tony Stark had introduced a Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing technology at a presentation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Stark later announced the September Foundation Grant, which fully funds the projects of every student at MIT. He expressed how he wanted the students to just “reframe the future”.
One of the students that Tony Stark funds could be Reed Richards. This would also give Reeds the funding to take the other three to space where they get exposed to cosmic radiation and gain superpowers. However, Reed’s MCU backstory as an MIT student would have to be unveiled first. We know how much MCU loves connecting stories to Tony Stark.
However, these are just one of the theories that are floating around right now. Even the slightest possible chance for Robert Downey Jr. to come back in any way alongside Reed would surely be loved by fans. Whether this happens or not, we can’t say right now. We will have to wait probably until 2023 to see how the ‘Fantastic Four’ are explored in Marvel Phase 4.
