For all the Jen, Moss, and Roy fans out there, we have serious news about ‘The IT Crowd’ Season 5. It’s been seven years since the last episode aired on 27 September 2013, but the fans are still eagerly hopeful for ‘The IT Crowd’ Season 5.
Written by Graham Linehan, the British sitcom ‘The IT Crowd’ stars Chris O’Dowd, Richard Ayoade, Katherine Parkinson, and Matt Berry as three IT department staff members at the fictional Reynholm Industries. Given the show’s cult status, it has been both critically-acclaimed and commercially successful.

‘The IT Crowd’: What happened to the show?
In the past, shows have been cancelled due to a variety of reasons. Some for political reasons, some for personal issues, some for falling ratings, while some for painfully deteriorating storylines. The ‘The IT Crowd’ had a unique scenario where the sitcom had to be cancelled because two of the main actors transitioned into having prosperous movie careers. Unfortunately, that is when the already-commissioned season 5 of ‘The IT Crowd’ could not be produced. Fans were sorely disappointed when they were left high and dry, without any conclusion.
British television shows have a history of not overstaying their welcome. ‘The IT Crowd’ was no exception. Instead of giving a whole farewell season, they chose to cut it down to a 40minute special episode. In fact, according to “BleedingCool”, the script for the mega episode was already completed in 2012. With Parkinson’s pregnancy and O’Dowd and Ayoade’s flourishing film careers, Linehan revealed that they were waiting for the actors to free up their schedules. Actor Chris O’Dowd also expressed his interest in a reunion, stating that the characters needed “closure” and so did the audience.
‘The IT Crowd’ Season 5 Episode 1: Tipping the hat
Premiering on Channel 4 on 3 February 2006, the comedy sitcom ran for four seasons with six episodes each. When the sitcom suddenly halted production in 2010 after season 4, rumours of a possible ‘The IT Crowd’ Season 5 started doing rounds. Two years after the sudden halt, creator Graham Linehan finally broke his silence on social networking site Reddit in 2012.
“The good news is an extended special next year called … actually I won’t tell you the title because you’ll end up imagining better storylines than the one I’ve written”,
wrote Linehan. Although ‘The IT Crowd’ Season 5 release date was still unknown, fans went gaga over the news. On 27 March 2013, came the finale – ‘The Internet Is Coming’. Besides incorporating a satirical take on contemporary trends like Twitter and viral videos, Linehan also picked up a plot point that was established in the pilot episode seven years ago. The presence of a studio audience was a bonus and added to the theatrical feel of the cult show. Linehan also gave Parkinson, O’Dowd, Ayoade a big solo moment each to take a final bow.
For some, the episode was a befitting end to the hit sitcom, while for some it seemed like Linehan had too much to squeeze in a 40-minute slot. Perhaps, the pace could have been eased with an additional 40-minute episode. Nonetheless, the episode was very successful in delivering the last laugh.
“I’m sorry for your loss, move on.”
‘The IT Crowd’ Season 5 Episode 1 was cleverly left open-ended for the characters to pick up from wherever they left off, in case of a spin-off, revival, or reboot. But truth be told, creator Graham Linehan has already buried all speculations around ‘The IT Crowd’ reboot.
He wrote on Reddit:
“I’ll say right off the bat … the bad news is no IT Crowd Series 5.”
To reaffirm, Linehan told “BBC” :
“I felt that the last series was a nice strong point to go out on, and anything further might just be running on the spot. You don’t do your best work when you’re running on the spot. It feels like a natural time to wind things down.”
If you are still wondering if ‘The IT Crowd’ Season 5 stands cancelled, sadly the answer is yes. So, like Roy said, “Sorry for your loss, move on”. But what about a remake? On 14 December 2017, “Variety” reported that NBC is attempting to adapt the British sitcom ‘The IT Crowd’ for the American audience, with original series creator Graham Linehan as the writer on board.
In this age of reboots and remakes, is ‘The IT Crowd’ all set to join the bandwagon? Tell us in the comments below!
