SHANKU SANTRA
#Kolkata: The Food Minister was finally forced to sit down for talks due to the threat of ‘Save Sarabangla Ration and Joint Forum’. Yesterday, the food minister sat down for talks with the leaders of the forum and assured that their demands would be considered as soon as possible. Receiving that assurance, the protesters withdrew from their action. Sarabangla ration dealers had complained that commissions were paid per quintal in other states. Many times less than that is given in West Bengal. Where in Maharashtra 250 rupees, in Goa 200 rupees, in Delhi 200 rupees, in Kerala 130 rupees. In West Bengal, the government has set a commission of only Tk 6 per quintal.
Ration dealers complain that they are not able to earn a living properly. Their further complaint is where the commission is fixed at Rs 8 per quintal. There is only 60 rupees per quintal, the government is giving them. The demands of the ration dealers are to pay adequate commission as per the agreement, correct door step delivery, provision of correct deficit, timely amendment in PDS control order including unit parity etc. They further claim that free-ration services have been imposed on them without any solution to those special problems.
Ration dealers staged a protest in front of the food building on January 18. He threatened that the ration system would be suspended in the whole of Bengal from February 1. Corona is still running. Such threats in the face of elections there have naturally shaken the government. Mancha’s joint general secretary Nikhilesh Ghosh said that ration dealers are on holiday on Monday, February 1. No action is being taken that day. The minister has listened to their problems. He will discuss with the chief minister. Arrange for their recovery from the commission. If the dues are not collected, then they will continue the movement by keeping the ration system running.
