‘Justified’ comes to an end after six seasons
After six glorifying seasons, fans of ‘Justified’ had to say goodbye to Raylan Givens, the U.S. Marshal who gave it back to the cocky White supremacists. Season 7 of ‘Justified’ was cancelled before it could see the light of the day. ‘Justified’ followed the story of Givens, a man of law of the present times, but one with the style and antics of the 19th century. Nevertheless, his methods could not always be called conventional when it came to providing justice. This puts a target on his back as he is chased after by criminals and has to suffer through the politics of his superiors.
Throughout the six seasons of ‘Justified’, we follow Givens as he works his ways with corrupt cops, White supremacists, and his nemesis, Boyd Crowder. The FX crime drama pulled out all the stops while bagging high critical acclaim including many prestigious awards in script, direction, and for the brilliant performance of Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens.
‘Justified’ provided its audience with a gripping plot and, for some, the end came too early. Fans have been hoping for a season of ‘Justified’ but it seems like a long way for the “cancelled” status to get changed for better. A fan wrote on “Reddit”,
“As long as they can get most of the crew back, I think they have a shot. Rather, I know they have a shot. If Netflix can approve more seasons of trailer park boys, something like this is surely in the bag. I’m sure salary points will be a problem as the cast, particularly Timothy Olyphant and Walt Goggins, are probably going to be quite expensive. But I’m sure it will be worth it”.
‘Justified’ Season 7: Reason behind the cancellation
Although there’s a tie between fans who support the show being cancelled and fans who don’t, to be fair, even the creators of ‘Justified’ felt that calling in season 7 would be dragging it way too far. In fact, as reported by executive producer, Graham Yost, the ending of ‘Justified’ had been in the works since season 4. They had decided to play out Raylan Givens’ life in a certain way and that’s exactly what they had done. Anything more would have been outstaying their welcome. One more factor that had played a major role in pulling the cord for ‘Justified’ was the passing away of Elmore Leonard, the writer of the novels that inspired the series.
All in all, the fate of ‘Justified’ had been decided long before we knew. More so, because the creators had felt that the story was done being told and it was time to close the chapter on the life of Givens and Boyd. Talking to the press, Graham Yost had explained,
“We just felt like if this chapter in Raylan’s life was about Raylan and Boyd [Walton Goggins] that we could only take it so far, that was basically it. We didn’t want to outstay our welcome”.
Timothy Olyphant on the cancellation of ‘Justified’
We know what the fans think and what the creators think, but what went on in the mind of Raylan Givens himself. Timothy Olyphant, the actor who played Givens on ‘Justified’, explained that it was a mutual decision on both his and Yost’s end for the show to be cancelled ahead of season 7. According to Olyphant, there couldn’t have been better timing and ending for the show. Although he feels stupid to have agreed to giving the red light for a show as great as ‘Justified’, he’s not so sure if he would miss Givens that much.
When “Rolling Stone’ cornered Olyphant asking whether he would miss Raylan Givens, his answer was cheeky but honest. He said,
“I know what you mean by that question, but … no. I mean, I realize this was a great part to play, and I’ll miss working with these guys a lot. But I had some problems with Raylan. I’m not so sure he’s a great guy”.
