During the time the series was on-air, it saw two separate spin-offs and a South Korean adaptation too.

The not so popular spin-off of ‘Criminal Minds’
The first spin-off ever released by the makers of ‘Criminal Minds’ was called the ‘Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior’. The show premiered to a large audience that was already much devoted to its original series. ‘Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior‘ revolved around a team of specialists that worked for the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. The unit was led by Sam Cooper (Forest Whitaker) who first appeared in the fifth season of ‘Criminal Minds’.
Fans of the original series were quick to figure out the similar circumstances of the spin-off series. ‘Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior’ featured Janeane Garofalo as Senior Special Agent Beth Griffith, Michael Kelly as mysterious Special Agent Jonathan Prophet Sims, Kirsten Vangsness as Penelope Garcia, Matt Ryan as Mick Rawson, and Beau Garrett and Gina LaSalle.
With a list of power-packed actors on board, ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’ was expected to excel in all departments. Sadly, the show was called off before it could even complete its first season. After a successful premiere, the following episodes experienced a significant drop in their ratings that never bounced back. Even an average of 9.3 million viewers per episode could not save the spin-off.

In 2016, CBS decided to give a ‘Criminal Minds’ spin-off another shot. Showrunner Erica Messer released ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’. The show focussed around a special team of FBI agents that were addressed as the International Response Team. Their main task was to save American stuck abroad. The situation featured college students stuck in South Africa, kidnappings in Turkey, and much more. The show depicted several culprits that had complex psychological issues, past traumatic incidents, or were plain heartless.
‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’ starred Gary Sinise, Tyler James Williams, Alana De La Garza, Daniel Henney, and Annie Funke. However, the show was cancelled after two seasons as it could not achieve the same popularity that ‘Criminal Minds’ itself achieved. Its season 2 received a rating of 0.8 and a viewership of just five million per episode which was significantly lower than its previous seasons. Sadly, CBS expected the ‘Criminal Mind’ spin-off to do extremely well.

Why was ‘Criminal Minds’ cancelled
After being on air for almost fifteen years, CBS decided to put an end to the series. The main reason behind this decision was its ratings that had been decreasing for a while. The EVP current programs of CBS, Amy Reisenbach told Deadline: “It is the quintessential CBS hit. We are so proud to have aired it. It speaks to everything we do best, which is air quality television.”
Thankfully, fans were not left with a cliffhanger ending. The network allowed showrunner Erica Messer to give the long-running series a proper ending with a ten-episode final season. Hence, ending its run with a total of 325 episodes.
“We wanted to make sure Erica had the time and ability to write a season fourteen finale that honours the characters and the fans”, said Amy Reisenbach. “We discussed wanting to keep the show in continuous production so ten felt like the right number for us to roll straight into and give Erica enough episodes to end the series the way she wanted to.”
Currently, there has been no news regarding the spin-offs of ‘Criminal Minds’. Keeping in mind the failure of its past two spin-offs, showrunner Erica Messer might skip the idea of a third season. Tell us what you think about another spin-off of ‘Criminal Minds’ in the comment section down below!
