‘Hunters’ season finale: A twisted tale of crime, controversies, and killing Nazis
‘Hunters’ has been facing obstacles since its inception. Even when creator David Weil was pitching the concept to various studios, most rejected him right away because of his triggering, fearless concept of Jewish heroes avenging their slaughtered ancestors. The traditional entertainment market wasn’t ready to experiment. But, Jordan Peele wasn’t one of them.
‘Hunters’ was inspired by the bedtime stories on World War II told by Weil’s grandmother Sarah, who herself was an Auschwitz camp survivor. As a six-year-old, Weil found those stories “strange and jarring”. He told “EW.com”,
“I saw those stories as comic book stories, stories of grand good versus grand evil, and that became the lens through which I saw the Holocaust”.
Upon release, ‘Hunters’ faced criticism from the Auschwitz Memorial Museum, which preserves the former concentration camp. The human game of chess depicted using Auschwitz as the setting was strongly criticised by the institution.

David Weil, who has family connections to the concentration camp, responded saying that he included the ‘chess match’ to
“powerfully counteract the revisionist narrative that whitewashes Nazi perpetration, by showcasing the most extreme – and representationally truthful – sadism and violence that the Nazis perpetrated against the Jews and other victims”.

‘Hunters’ Season 2: Amazon Studios waves the green flag
None of the criticisms could stop Amazon Studios from announcing ‘Hunters’ Season 2. Yes, on 3rd August 2020, the Jordan Peele-produced series was renewed for a second season. Speaking on the renewal, David Weil said,
“I am beyond grateful to Jen and the Amazon family for their continued extraordinary support of Hunters. Alongside our magnificent cast, incredible crew, and brilliant writers and producers, I am more eager than ever to share the next chapter of the Hunters saga with the world”.
“With Hunters, David Weil’s bold vision and fearless imagination powered a thrilling, twisty, action-packed first season that engaged Prime Video customers around the world. We are thrilled that David, Jordan and the ‘Hunters’ will be back with us for more”
Announced head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke.
‘Hunters’ Season 2 is touted to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
‘Hunters’ Season 2: Trailer, plot, cast, and release date
‘Hunters’ Season 1 followed a diverse group of Nazi hunters in 1970s New York City, who track down high-ranking Nazi officials covertly conspiring to start a Fourth Reich in the United States.
Given where ‘Hunters’ season finale concluded, ‘Hunters’ Season 2 will primarily focus on the clashes between Agent Millie’s task force and Jonah’s Nazi hunters. The new season is also expected to explore Sister Harriet’s suspect loyalty and what follows after Adolf Hitler’s cameo at the end of season 1.
Executive producer Nikki Toscano told “Refinery 29” how she would like to dive deeper into the character of Joe, following the big Hitler surprise. She said,
“You’ll see a lot of soul-searching, in terms of a [possible] season two, as far as who Joe is, what he’s motivated by, and how the Nazis are able to use him as a tool for destruction”.

David Weil told “Digital Spy” that
“nothing scares us” in terms of storytelling. When asked about the possibilities of ‘Hunters’ eventually reaching the modern-day timeline, Weil said, “Yeah, if Amazon will give us that ability in the future, it’d be a very interesting thing to do”.
‘Hunters’ Season 2 will see the return of Logan Lerman as Jonah, Jerrika Hinton as Millie, Lena Olin as Eva, Saul Rubinek as Murray, Carol Kane as Mindy, Josh Radnor as Lonny, Greg Austin as Travis, Tiffany Boone as Roxy, Louis Ozawa as Joe, Kate Mulvany as Sister Harriet and Dylan Baker as Biff Simpson. Considering the ‘Hunters’ season finale, Al Pacino’s Meyer Offerman could only return in season 2 as flashbacks.
As for the ‘Hunters’ Season 2 trailer, there hasn’t been any news so far, neither on the shooting front nor an official release date. Amazon Studios hasn’t made any official announcement so far. The new season is expected to release some time at the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022. ‘Hunters’ Season 2 trailer will hit the screens once the production kicks off.
