Back in 2004, Carrie from ‘The King of Queens’ seemed to have gained a few pounds and the team tried to cover it by making her wear baggy clothes. Despite some pretty obvious signs, fans are still confused over Leah Remini aka Carrie’s pregnancy. Find out more below!
Hiding pregnancies is something that Hollywood sitcoms have gotten away with on many instances. ‘The King of Queens‘ could be counted as one of the funniest American shows to drop on the face of the earth. Carrie Spooner Heffernan, played by Leah Remini, was said to have been pregnant during one of the seasons on the show, and here’s how the creators covered it all up!

Leah Remini was pregnant while playing jobless Carrie
Leah Remini’s pregnancy was too obvious to miss in the sixth season of ‘The King of Queens’. Remini has been fairly vocal about her pregnancy a little after giving birth to her daughter with whom she was pregnant during season 6 of the sitcom. However, Remini’s pregnancy was not written into the show’s script for the season, which naturally made it tough for the ‘The King of Queens’ team to conceal it as well as they could. Nevertheless, despite great honest efforts, the concealing job wasn’t done that well. In order to justify Remini’s baby weight gain, the writers made Carrie lose her job, sitting on her couch eating and lazing her day about in big baggy sweats. Even then, by the end of season 6, Remini’s baby bump seemed prominent enough not to fool the viewers anymore. Honestly, it probably would have just been better to have used Remini’s pregnancy to advantage, using it in the plot.
All that aside, however, Leah Remini had expressed how loved, cared for, and free she had been made to feel on set during her months of pregnancy. She admitted that everyone had been extremely considerate about her body weight insecurities and food cravings. When “Working Mother,” asked Remini about how she managed to handle her pregnancy on the sets of ‘The King of Queens’, she said,
“I was getting big as a house, and nobody cared. The people I worked with were beyond supportive. I had gained 80 pounds. I thought that was my time to have three boxes of mac and cheese, and french fries, and hamburgers. I remember asking [co-star] Kevin James, ‘It’s not that bad, right?’ and he’d say, ‘No, you look good’. Afterwards, he told me he couldn’t stop laughing at how big I was. But he never said it to me. Everyone was just so lovely”.
Leah Remini on her struggle with baby weight gain
It’s not easy being a mother and especially not when you are a celebrity. Remini’s gain in pounds in her pregnancy during ‘The King of Queens’ had earned her a lot of backlash, for all the wrong reasons. Although Remini had called conceiving her daughter the “biggest life-altering decision” of her life, she was not oblivious to what it was costing her. She did not shy away from her frustration and disappointment regarding how her 80-pound weight gain during pregnancy was received by the press and the public. She even went on to explain how silly the whole obsession of people is over celebrities’ post-partum bodies.
She said,
“When you have a baby and you are not blessed with a metabolism [such] that you can get back into your jeans the very next day, it becomes something to focus on. I don’t even blame the papers. They are making money from it. But the people who are buying it? … I just went on [the] Tyra [Banks Show]. She has a great campaign called ‘So What?’ I think its fabulous. It’s about sending that message — yeah, I’m fat, or yeah, I’m chubby, or yeah, I have stretch marks: So what! I love that message”.
Carrie and Doug manage to get a baby at the end of the series
Coming back to the matter of Carrie’s pregnancy, Leah Remini’s character did go through a traumatic experience on her journey to becoming a mother. Carrie had a miscarriage that even took a toll on her relationship with Doug. However, all was well with the world again when in the series finale, Carrie and Doug finally adopt a baby from China, fulfilling their dream of becoming parents. Not just that, on the flight back home, it is revealed that somehow, quite miraculously, if we may say so, Carrie is pregnant again. In an emotional final scene, we realise that Carrie was able to carry the pregnancy for the full term as we see them struggle to keep up with both their kids. Find a better happy-ending than that!
