Kim Bodnia says goodbye to the sets of ‘The Bridge’
The Scandinavian thriller, ‘The Bridge’, presented one of the strongest lead partnerships on TV until a crack opened up in that partnership just before the show entered season 3. For the first two seasons, ‘The Bridge’ starred Sofia Helin and Kim Bodnia in a powerful and bold partnership in the crime thriller until Bodnia decided to no longer return to the sets. Season 3 of ‘The Bridge’ saw Sofia Helin come back as Saga Noren but without his on-screen partner, Kim Bodnia, who played Martin Rohde. For the first two seasons, Bodnia’s performance had attracted a massive fan following for the Swedish crime thriller. The last that was seen of Kim Bodnia as Martin Rohde was in season 2, where he was left struggling in a tight spot. He was charged with murder, with Saga, his partner, being convinced that Rohde was guilty as charged for poisoning his son’s killer from season 1.
Apparently, as reported by the Swedish co-producer of ‘The Bridge’, Kim Bodnia was not entirely happy with where things were heading with his character. There was a clash in the visions of the creators and Bodnia himself, with respect to the content of ‘The Bridge’ season 3. Bodnia was reported to be specifically unhappy with the movement of his character arc, which made him cut the cord. Bodnia’s exit from ‘The Bridge’ saw season 3 bring some changes, which included Saga Noren collaborating with a fresh team of detectives.
What did Bodnia’s exit mean for the show?
Kim Bodnia’s exit from ‘The Bridge’, ahead of season 3, did not just take away a central piece of the show’s game, but seems like most of the planned plotlines had to be thrown out the window. That meant the content for the season had to be altered entirely, creating new plots from scratch and that included changing around at least four scripts. Rosenfeldt talked about the changes that had to be made and said,
“The plot is the same, the crime story is the same. Martin’s part in the investigation and his personal strand – that was what we had to rewrite”.
Moreover, it’s likely that people would see ‘The Bridge’ as incomplete without Martin Rohde. However, Rosenfeldt mentioned about what Martin’s exit meant for the show and why it seemed like a blessing in disguise. He said,
“It forced us to think, what is The Bridge without Martin? What is the DNA of The Bridge if he’s not in it? It actually brought more energy to it, because we had to think outside the box. It was kind of a blessing in disguise”.
He further explained that although it was difficult to blend into the script the absence of Martin, it wasn’t exactly all catastrophic since season 3 of ‘The Bridge’ was always planned to focus more on Saga.
Here’s what Bodnia had to say
As for Kim Bodnia, he has admitted that there was more than just the development of his character arc that bothered him forcing him to quit ‘The Bridge’ before season 3. Kim Bodnia, who is also Jewish, explained that creative and cultural differences compelled him to leave the show. The rising anti-Semitism in Malmo made it difficult for him to be a Jew in Sweden. He said,
“It’s growing, especially in Malmö where we shot ‘The Bridge’ in Sweden. It’s not very comfortable to be there as a Jewish person. So, of course, this has something to do with why it’s easy for me to say no to working in Sweden”.
He admitted to not feeling safe shooting in Sweden. Since Sweden played a crucial role in the series; he had no other option left other than quitting. Naturally, even if Bodnia had faced no creative differences with ‘The Bridge’ team, the cultural differences would have forced him out eventually, anyway.
