Are the Joker and Bruce Wayne aka Batman siblings?
One of the surprising facts that Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) discovers that later leads to his transformation is from his mother’s past. It hints at a possible connection between Arthur and Bruce Wayne aka his enemy, Batman. At the beginning of the movie, Arthur notices that his mother, Penny Fleck (Frances Conroy), is obsessed with a man named Thomas Wayne (Brett Cullen).
Throughout the movie, Penny kept sending letters to Wayne. She kept telling Arthur that he is a great man who will help them with their present situation. Though she never explains the reason behind it. When he opens a letter that Penny addressed to him, he finds a handwritten note that suggests Arthur is Thomas’ son. Hence, suggesting the fact that Joker and Batman might just be half-brothers. But how much truth does this fact hold?
If you remember, Penny had actually mentioned that Arthur was born out of an illegitimate affair, she had with her then-boss Thomas. In a flashback scene, Penny talked about how Thomas’ status, power, money, and influence helped produce the paperwork that stated that Arthur was adopted. Later, Arthur does visit the hospital and finds his mother’s file. The file says that she adopted him as a child. It further stated that Arthur was often beaten up by her abusive partner.
However, according to Thomas, Penny was mentally ill when she worked for him. Hence her claim that their sons, Joker, and Batman are siblings is not true. But the photo and the handwritten note suggested something else. Also, only a man as powerful as Thomas Wayne is powerful enough to hide an illegitimate child and his mother in a hospital.
Brett Cullen talks about the Joker
Actor Brett Cullen, who played the role of Thomas Wayne in the 2019 movie ‘Joker’, was also surprised when he read the twist. He also recalled how it would be a compelling reason for Joker to hate Batman.
In an interview with “The Hollywood Reporter”, Cullen talked about how the idea that the Joker is an illegitimate child that didn’t get anything from the Wayne family is a very compelling motivation for his character’s hatred. Arthur’s mother had worked for Thomas. Penny was a beautiful woman who Thomas was attracted to, and it led to a physical relationship.
Cullen also shared how he played his scenes as though Penny and Thomas did indeed have an affair. Hence, indicating a strong possibility that he is the Joker’s father and Batman his sibling. Many also feel that it gave Arthur aka the Joker the motivation to kill Batman’s parents. But it is not correct. Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker does not kill Batman’s parents outright. However, he does create a lawless situation that somehow causes it to happen. Towards the end of the movie, we see several Joker minions. Out of nowhere, a guy in a Joker mask kills Thomas and Martha Wayne, in front of a ten-year-old Bruce Wayne.

Is ‘Joker’ related to the ‘Batman’ movie?
During a Toronto International Film Festival Q&A, director Todd Phillips talked about how the Joker is not intended to be part of the DC film universe or related to the ‘Batman’ movie.
Phillips explained that it is not really connected to that DC Movie Universe. His original idea, when he went to Warner Bros., was about a side label to DC. He wanted to do a kind of a character study, where you get a filmmaker to come in and do some deep dive into a character.
“So, it was never meant to connect, so I do not see it connecting to anything in the future. I think this is just this movie, you know”
Said the director.
