‘That ’70s show’ – A classic representation of America in the ’70s
‘That ’70s Show’, a quirky representation of the ’70s America, mesmerised fans all over the world with its hilarious catchphrases and rip-roaring comebacks. ‘That ’70s Show’ became a consistent performer for FOX, becoming one of their flagship shows. With eight seasons, comprising 200 episodes, it earned the title of Fox’s second-longest-running live-action sitcom ever.
‘That ’70s Show’ starred Topher Grace as Eric, Mila Kunis as Jackie, Ashton Kutcher as Kelso, Danny Masterson as Hyde, Laura Prepon as Donna, Wilmer Valderrama as Fez, and Lisa Robin Kelly as Laurie. The main adult cast included Debra Jo Rupp as Kitty, Kurtwood Smith as Red, Don Stark as Bob, Tommy Chong as Leo, and Tanya Roberts as Midge.
The friend circle was the perfect formula for madness, an amalgamation of distinctly memorable characters- geeky Eric, dumb but charming Kelso, rich and popular Jackie, smart feminist Donna, rebellious Hyde, and the sleazy foreign exchange student Fez. ‘That ’70s Show’ revolved around the adventures and misadventures of Eric and his friends, mostly originating in Eric’s basement while smoking pot.
Despite being a comedy, ‘That ’70s Show’ addressed multiple social issues of the 19’70s such as the rising feminism, the conflict between blue-collar workers and the American government, generational gap, economic hardships faced due to recession, underage drinking, and drug use. The series also highlighted the various trends of the ’70s, like bell-bottom pants, VCR, cable TV, video games such as Pong and Space Invaders, Disco, and Star Wars. They even called the TV remote “the clicker”.
Is ‘That ’70s Show’ movie a real possibility?
Although the show ended in 2006, fans can still enjoy Red’s signature “foot-in-the-ass” and Kelso’s “burn”, all thanks to Netflix. So, is ‘That ’70s Show’ coming back to Netflix with the much-anticipated reunion movie? This question has been bugging fans for quite some time now. But the curiosity rekindled amidst the pandemic and global lockdown when rumours of a ‘That ’70s Show’ reunion on Zoom started doing rounds. Mila Kunis was the one who broke the news at the Lionsgate presentation during CinemaCon 2018 in Las Vegas while promoting her film ‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’. Although Kunis seemed unsure of any developments around the ‘That ’70s Show’ movie, she clearly did not want to rule out the possibility.
“You know, maybe? I can’t say ‘no,’ because we’re all still very good friends, but we’re all in such different places in our life”, Kunis told “ET Online”.
Wilmer
“Fez” Valderrama also upped the hopes of ‘That ’70s Show’ movie while speaking to “People Now”. Valderrama said, “We’ve talked about it … maybe it’s “That ’70s Movie”, but it takes place in the ’90s? Where are they now? Or maybe the late ’80s might be kind of funny too. I don’t know, there’s nothing creatively in the works, but we talked about it. We thought it’d be really fun, and funny because the tone of That ”70s Show could lend itself for something very forward-thinking”.
Even Topher Grace told “The Hollywood Reporter”,
“I would do it for sure because that was a very wonderful time for us. We were all very close, having that experience every single day with each other. It was great to broadcast it out once a week, but, like, I’m still great friends with those guys”.
Ever since the streaming of ‘That ’70s Show’ on Netflix, a new generation of fans have risen, some even younger than the show itself. Maybe not a movie, but they are surely looking forward to a ‘That ’70s Show’ reunion on Zoom.
‘That ’70s Show’ movie – Release date, plot, cast
Although fans have been waiting in anticipation for a ‘That ‘’70s Show’ reboot, neither Netflix nor the cast and crew have made any official announcement regarding the release date so far. But be rest assured that the cast members are more than willing for ‘That ’70s Show’ to make a comeback on the big screen.
Maybe no longer in Eric Forman’s basement, but Topher Grace told “US Weekly”, “Yeah, we’re all in a group text”. With all these little hints from the cast members, fans can definitely hope to see their favourite sitcom reunite on Netflix! But when exactly, we are yet to find out.
A ‘That ’70s Show’ reunion on Zoom could happen any day. Till then, tell us in the comments below, which ‘That ’70s Show’ character did you like the most?
